Can iPhone remote App wake up my Mac?

I use my primary computer as a media server for the whole house. My computer is in an upstairs office. Sometimes I'd like to start up my music without going all the way upstairs to "wake" the computer. My iphone remote app works perfectly, when the computer is awake, but if the computer is asleep, I can't just start my music from the phone.

Am I missing some setting somewhere, or is this outside of the remote app capability?

Thanks

Fabian

MBP, Mac OS X (10.5.8), itunes 9.02, remote 1.3.2

no, you won't be able to do that. you machine needs to be awake for the remote app to see it.

you can extend the time your machine is awake via system preferences > energy saver > sleep.

i have my machines set to sleep after 3 hours inactivity while the display's being put to sleep after 15 minutes

I'd rather just let the drives sleep. Usually I find myself trying to fire up the music 6 or 10 hours after my last visit. So a couple hours of difference won't really help.

Thanks

okay, each unto his own, i suppose.

anyway, if you feel you're done here, please be sure to mark your question as answered

I was having trouble with "Wake on Demand" as well. Have a look at this kb entry: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3774

The key piece of info for me was setting my wireless network to be first in the list of Preferred Networks. It worked once I did this. (Note: I need to have the lid of my Macbook open; it wouldn't wake up if the lid was closed).

Hope this helps.

thanks for this, alas, my MBP is too old and does not have that feature (:-((

i seem to recall one user suggesting to place a magnet close to his lappy, you know where the little snap-to's are. apparently he was able to trick the lappy into thinking the lid was open (while it was not).

good computing !

Older Macs don't all support "wake over wireless network." All newer ones do. Mine is in between, it will wake for a wired network connection, but not a wireless one.

there may still be a way to do what you want. however, it would require an ethernet cable and forking out some $$ for a new airport extreme

integrate that baby into your network and run an ethernet cable from your media server to it. turn off airport on the machine with iTunes and, voila, you should be able to wake that machine +for network access+
