Can't adjust brightness

Hello, some strange problem I have. I've bought new white MacBook, restore from backup and then can't adjust monitor brightness.
When I pressing F1/F2 – semitransparent block appear but nothing happens.
When I try do adjust brightness in Settings/Monitor it is in the maximum and doesn't set to another level.

What is it? Help me, pls.

MB White 2.3/2/250, MB Air 1.6/2/120, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Try pressing the FN key while typing the function key.

It doesn't matter, 'cuz it doesn't work in Settings/Monitor

You could try reinstalling Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Be well backed up if you do because, while safe, this procedure still is an install.

So, I've tried to install and reboot 10.6.1 update (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL930) and problem is not solved 😟 Any ideas? Re-install OS?

I assume that brightness control worked originally. If so, then, yes, maybe you need to do an erase and install. Before doing so, I would clone your existing install to an external drive for backup, possible migration, and fail-safe reasons. Under the circumstances, I would migrate only your data and your apps. I also suggest that you take your time in moving to 10.6.1. Unless it is supposed to fix something you are having trouble with, then I would ignore it. It has caused problems for some. You can always wait for the next combo update.
