Urgent! HD is dying and need help using diskwarrior to save data!

In an earlier post, I was having trouble logging in. Well things have progressed and I can't even boot up now. I've done all the suggestions with fsck, etc. to limited success. Sometimes I can log in and even copy a few files, but soon after it freezes again.

I bit the bullet and decided to try diskwarrior 4.2. I attached my external HD to the mac and booted up using the DW DVD. It was able to detect my directory and then build a replacement directory.

The first problem is that I cannot replace the old directory with the new one because the report says that the disk is malfunctioning and the directory is too damaged to be replaced. It then suggests that I backup my files using the preview pane. The preview pane shows my what the old directory and the rebuilt one look like.

Here is my big problem. Even though I can see the files that the rebuild has provided, I cannot figure out how to get them to my ext. HD! When I check out the available disks in the dropdown, I don't see that lacie. The only problem I can think of is that this HD is formatted in FAT32 so it works with windows in bootcamp as well. Ironically, my windows 7 install boots up fine and works great. Unfortunately it isn't tied to the mac HD

So, how in the world can I get my data off this dying HD?? I can see it but can't do anything with it. That's the really frustrating part!

Any other suggestions are very very appreciated!!

Thx for the reply. Yes, I have the originals but it shipped with Tiger. I've since purchased Leopard and Snow Leopard. I can boot into the install disk. Is hardware test included with disk utilities or is it separate?

Anyway, back to original problem as my main concern is data. Do you think that diskwarrior might not recognize my ext hd because it's formatted FAT32?

If there's a good chance this is the case, I'm going to buy a new ext hd tomorrow and format mac. From there, I'm hoping diskwarrior would then recognize it when I start DW up and then allow me to copy files to it.

Right now, I see the files there but just cant get them anywhere safe! That is so frustrating!

Keep the ideas coming!!

"For Intel-based Apple computers shipping with Mac OS X v10.5.4 or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and should be included with your computer."
The Tiger disks will do the AHT with your current configuration.

From everything you say, I would guess its a software problem, not hardware.
Can you run disk utility on one of your computers and format the fat32 drive to Mac?

Thanks again for the suggestions. I've tried to startup in target mode but the problem is that my laptop doesn't see the imac as a drive. I guess that's how damaged the dir is.

As far as reformatting my ext hd, well, I have stuff on it that I need as well and there's not enough room on the laptop for it all to fit.

Looks like a trip to the store for a new ext HD is in my future.

If there is anything else that comes to mind for anyone, please let me know!

Thanks,

Dan

Back from the store and have just formatted new HD and ran Diskwarrior. This time DW recognized the new drive and I'm copying files to it as I write!

Looks like crisis is averted for now!

I partitioned the new drive (1 TB) for 320g just for backup and then the remainder (about 650g) for data.

Once I get everything copied, I'll reformat my imac HD, run disk util and disk warrior on to confirm it's OK, then reinstall Leopard, applications, etc.

After that, I'll clone the HD onto my backup partition and then install Snow Leopard. I don't know if SL was the problem, but I want to have a complete backup before I install again. If I start having problems, I'll go back to the old source.

Thanks for all the advise and support.

Dan
