iChat won't allow me to add new accounts

I am having difficulties adding a new account (AIM) in iChat. I am logged in as Administrator, and when I click the + under Preferences < Accounts, only the Bonjour account shows up. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi,

SO this is an Admin Mac User Account and in iChat when you click the + Button you cannot add a Screen Name

Like this Pic ?

If you have no Screen Name showing at the moment then Bonjour will be the only one listed until you add more.

Do you have a Screen Name that you have Registered already (you need to do that or use the Get an iChat Account button which shows after pressing the + Button.)

In iChat 4 that button leads here

In iChat 5 it seems to lead to the AIM R egistration page

Ummm,

Odd.

First of all lets try deleting com.apple.ichat.plist
You have to go manually to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and drag the item to the Trash. (Spotlight does not report on Contents of Library Folders).

Restart iChat afterwards.

If that one does not sort it delete com.apple.iChatAgent but this will need a restart of the computer.

Do one at a time.

Both have some info about accounts in them.

Hi,

You could try deleting the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restarting iChat.

I don't think it will have much effect though.

Most likely this is going to take the Easy Way listed here

It is important to do the last bit as well about the Combo Update (Leopard or lower) (iChat 5 was not updated at 10.6.1).

Hi Rob,

Can you answer some of the questions raised in this thread ?

Has the iChat Details ever been used in a Second Mac User Account that has had Parental Controls Active for iChat ?

In the iChat Preferences > Accounts > Security what option are you using ?

Have you used a Site anywhere that can list your Buddy list and have you Logged specifically out of that page ?
AIM Express on a Phone or other computer ?
Tokbox ?

It will be my tomorrow before I get to any reply.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for your suggestions in this thread. The iChat have not been used for another account on this Mac. Parental controls are off. The security setting is set to "everyone". No aim express use or tokbox. Not sure what those are.

I looked for the com.apple.iChat.plist and agent files, but they were not present in the Library/Preferences folder. Strange. I'm stuck!

Hi,

Tokbox is a Video Chatroom site where you can link in your various Buddy Lists.

AIM Express is a Web based version of doing AIM chats.

The .plists are In Hard Drive/Users/(your account name)/Library/Preferences
Or Your Little House iCon/Library/Preferences
Sometime written as ~/Library/Preferences where "~/" is the same as "Hard Drive/Users/(your account name)"

Hi,

That looks very close to an iChat 2 error

The Right hand refers to the My Card (me Card) in the Address Book not pointing to your own details.
(DO NOT use this Address Book Fix for your OS version - Just check the Address Book thinks you are you)
