I am trying to create an encrypted image using disk utility but when I select the type of encryption it does not ask for password. When selecting to create the image (encrypted or not) disk utility ask for a password to allow authopen to make changes. after that it gives the error: unable to create image.dmg. no space left on device. Any ideas on how to fix this?
If you select the option to use encryption, it will ask you for the password after you start the process, which may be after you get this error about "no space left on device."
How large is this disk image? How much free space is available on your startup drive?
after clicking ok at the error message no disk image is created. the image size is 100 MB. Thanks for replying. i downloaded the latest SW update today and still not able to create a disk image using disk utility. I have 867 GB available.
Not sure what is happening to cause this error... When you select the place to save the image file, you are selecting a location that is inside your user home folder?
I restarted the imac to no avail. I went ahead and created a new account last night.
In the new account disk utility asked for the password and created an image 120 gb in size.Could not trying to convert the image to an smaller size gave an error that the operation could not be performed. An unencrypted image still uses 120 gb of space.
Tried again in the first account and the same thing happened. It created and image, asked to enter a password but the image was about 120 gb.It did not open saying it was unmountable and trying to resized was not permitted.
Creating an image was an improvement but still unmountable and taking way to much space.
Are you saying that even when you specify 100mb as the size of the disk image, it creates one that is 120GB in size? Or are you saying that if you specify 120GB (or some other larger number) as the size, it works, but not for a smaller size disk image?
And are you saying there is a difference in the new user account, or that the problem is the same in both new and existing accounts.
When I am creating the image it does not ask for the size nor it gives me an option for it. after it creates the image (it takes a while) and I try to resize it. it gives me the error that operation is not permitted. For some reason both accounts are doing the same. Both create an image that is unmountable and 120 GB in size. Any ideas?
When you select +File -> New -> Blank Disk Image+ (from Disk Utility's menu bar), you should get a Save dialog, where you select where to save the file (you should select a location in your user home folder), name of the file as well as name of the disk image, size, format, encryption, and a few other characteristics. You have to see this dialog box before you can proceed to create the disk image, so I don't know what's happening in your case.
All this time I have been using the new image icon in disk utility. When I tried using the file>new>blank disk image path it works ok. Weird. This solves the problem that I had. However, why the icon does not work when is supposed to do the same thing as the File option? I'm calling it solved. Thanks for the help.
I have good experience in creating a disk image. But since I've been using Snow Leopard (Clean install) its been a pain to create a simple disk image. Nothing works. Encrypted or not, partition mapping style or other settings change still does not make it happen.
The situation is that around 5 minutes after the disk image creation process is launch the progress bar stagns and the fan keeps spinning high to cool off the processor. I've even let it do for an entire night and got some error message that I unfortunately can't recall but it was something very unhelpful like ''unable to complete disk image''
I'm wondering really if I'm the only one to have such a problem.
I cant say I have had your fan problems but, this process worked for me. I made 100mb encrypted read/write, Mac OS extended Journaled
When you click on your disk Utility app it should load up and come up with a large square that says in the middle of it Select a disk, volume, or image.
From there go up to New Image with out touching any of your drives in the side bar.
Do you get the normal screen from there with pop down options for size, ect..?
Is there any possibility that your using a strange name, I went for desktop and put a encryption and it worked for my for the first time.
The next step that could possibly help is do a system repair with the OS disk from startup.
Hopefully its something just fundamental that's gone wrong.
If you have done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+. If you have not restarted the iMac since noticing the problem, be sure to do that too.
If that does not help, try the test mentioned earlier in this topic and create a new admin user account. See if it works if you are logged into that account.
