I have just bought a new Apple Macbook. I am unable to access hotmail - Safari gives message re. unable to access server. I have cleared cache and reset Safari. No joy. I have gone to Preferences and enabled "cookies". Please can anybody help. I am absolutely frustrated. I can access other internet sites without any problems. Thank you, Helen Hall
Second, you may need some add-ons, such as Java, Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight, and so forth. Hotmail IS a Microsoft site, and thus,
may need more than the average site does.
Third, check your firewall. If it is set to anything other than "allow all", you will have to add Hotmail to the list.
Thank you for message. I have just downloaded most uptodate version of Safari. Firewall is set to "allow" all. Will look at your point re. add-on software - don't really know where to begin. Thank you.
All those items I mentioned are things that allow Safari to show certain items in a web page. I recommend you Google each one listed, and download using Safari to enhance your web experiences. If you have questions, post them here and I or someone else will be happy to answer them.
I fired up my "test" machine that has an out of the box copy of Snow Leopard running (10.6.1) and was able to access hotmail and my inbox without any plug-ins or updates. If you just bought a new MacBook it most likely also has Snow Leopard.
I was unable to find any indication in the source code that's being displayed for hotmail where a browser plugin was required like flash, silverlight, java, etc. In addition I also checked the page in Firefox and had no issues there as well.

thank you for your response. I will try Snow Leopard this evening. Made some progress. Set up Entourage for mail and redirected Hotmail through it. It appeared to work. However, I have noticed that I cannot sent messages to any hotmail.co.uk or hotmail.com account. They remain in the Outbox and there is a message to say that the Hotmail server has failed. All messages to other providers are sent without any problem. Thank you and I will keep in touch. Helen
I am losing the will to live! I visited the Apple Store in Belfast and in minutes using the Apple wireless network I connected to Hotmail trouble free. I am beginning to think that the problem maybe lies with my ISP - talktalk. I have visited their website and there definitely appears to be problems with talktalk and apple macs. Any thoughts anybody?
Continue to be strong! 😉 I know the sense of frustration there is when it seems the world is against Macs.
I am sure there is a way to get you configured so you can access Hotmail from home. I am wondering if there is something that can be configured from the Mac, or if there might need to be a change in the router.
I am sorted!!! I rang TalkTalk this morning - 2nd line support for Apple Macs - 0870 087 8046. I was directed to my router and was talked through changing a WAN setting - MTU option. This option was changed to 1431 bytes. All is now working brilliant. Thank you all for your help. Helen
