IPhone WIFI Strength

I have WIFI enabled on my Iphone and I connect to my AT&T DSL Wireless connection via my Linksys Router. If I disconnect and then re connect my signal is full strength then over time the signal weakens to only on dot why is this occurring ?

IPhone, iPhone OS 3.0.1, Dell Inspirion 1000

When the connection is made, the phone initially shows all WiFi bars regardless of signal strength, but within a minute or so, the actual signal strength is shown.

Thanks. My computers report a strong signal here in the room with the router the computers in oter rooms report good connections the Iphone is less than 2 feet away from the router but often reports a weak signal now at work I am about 12 feet away from the router (Linksys like the one I have at Home) and it always reports a strong signal. Should I suspect the router at home going bad ?

I have an AEBS (the older 2007 version NON dual band). My iphone signal strength varies from 2 to 3 in the same room. I have two computers in the house and their signal bars always stay full. I have my AEBS set to n (b/g compatible). One day, I'll get the newer dual band AEBS. But why on Earth would the iphone report only two bars in the same room??

"Bars" are not an absolute measure of signal strength and don't correlate between different devices. Unless you get a reading of dBm, they are only relative to that device's meter. 3 "bars"on the iPhone could be equivalent to "full bars" on your computers. Also, some iPhone cases and even the way you hold the phone relative to the antenna location will affect received signal strength.

If you have 3 devices connected to your router at the same time, the signal is divided across 3 channels with a fraction of the routers rated RF output send to each channel. Older routers can have frequency drift, resulting in reduced received signal strength. Sometimes rebooting the router will improve the signal. Getting a newer, dual band unit will help.

ouch. Just kidding. Well, my two computers (one next to the AEBS and the other several rooms away), always have full bars. My iphone flux's between 2 and 3 bars (3 being full) while in the same room as my AEBS. I am more trying to see if it's a wifi issue with the phone (meaning it's ability to receive wifi) or my AEBS. Since I never see any bars drop on either computer, I am just trying to figure out IF there is an issue. I guess I am obsessing about that (since you pay a lot of $ for the iphone, I want it to operate like it should).
