Hi chaps, I've read a lot of threads about this appleworks problem and they mainly advise trashing various prefs, this hasn't worked so tomorrow, when I can find the discs I'll try a re-install, meanwhile I thought I'd do some work in 'Word' but that doesn't open either, is this coincidental ? ... many thanks for any help. Regards Roger

It would seem to be a system-level problem, so doing an AppleWorks "fix" is not likely to fix the problem. So, the first thing I suggest is repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Then, run a utility to run the UNIX cron routines & clean caches. I use OnyX but there are others.

Also, make sure your hard drive isn't too full. It depends on how you use your computer, but for most normal users a minimum of 5 gigs free space at all times after installation is recommended. Power users may need more.

If this still doesn't work, repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility may help. Start up your Mac from the first system install disk. Then, instead of running the installer, go to the Installer menu & choose Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left-hand panel & click Repair Disk. When it is done, quit Disk Utility then quit Installer & restart your Mac.

Thanks Peggy, I'll get on to that later today and post my results ... so good of you to take the time. Roger

I have exactly the same problem, with Appleworks, Microsoft Office and other PPC apps, even though Rosetta is installed. I created a new user account, and the apps open fine there. So seems to be a tiny problem deep somewhere. I have deleted cashes, preferences and so on, but os far cannot find the cause of this bug.

As it works in another account but not yours, have you installed any third-party utilities or hacks in just your account? Are there any fonts just in your account? Since it's affecting more than AppleWorks, I suggest posting your question in a Snow Leopard forum.

I have solved the problem. As it applies to Appleworks (as well as other apps) I thought I might as well advise all of this possibility.

Yes Peggy, hacks and other items were installed, but some are also on my Macbook that works fine. After weeks of deleting preferences, caches etc...I found that DivX was the only "other" in System Preferences that was not in my Macbook. DivX has an uninstall facility, which I used, and now all PPC apps open and work fine.

How can we get someone to update Appleworks for us? It is still the most intuitive and easy-to-use application for word processing and Spreadsheets, AND the BEST for Drawing!!
Now I cannot even translate my Appleworks files into Excel - so that I can send them to others...the translator has disappeared from my computer.
    Please help!

I quite agree about Appleworks. I use the Calendar, printed out, regularly. But Apple have finished with the application.

Well one possibility could be to invest in iWork 09 and use Pages, the replacement for Appleworks. Pages will open Appleworks documents then you can save them as Word docs. The Numbers app can save/export as Excel files.

    I fully agree!
You can also open Draw documents in PAges if you first re-save them in AW to a WP document. Maybe that works for AW Paint documents.
