Apple Wireless Keyboard Eating Batteries

I haven´t read the whole thread all in all, just a couple of replys.

But since i own a new iMac 21.5" with a wireless Keyboard and a Magic Trackpad, the batteries of my Keyboard are already low on 16% after like nine days- and i am using my iMac daily, but not really working with it so far.

The Magic Trackpad stays at a level of 86%, which i could live with, as it seems suitable.

I googled this issue up, found a view similar posts, but not a real answer to it.

One blogged that he did a P- Ram reset, and took the batteries out/ switched the keyboard off, even deleted as a visible issue on the Mac- and afterwards it would have been running again.

Oh... new means bought 2012 (2011 model).

And i am trying to switch of both Trackpad and Keyboard now, whenever i am not using the iMac.

That means, i have had both on day and night the last nine days, because i thought both turn off by themselves.

As read (and fitting to my story), wether the Trackpad takes power of the Keyboard, or there are other Bluetooth devices running in my house or around (my smartphone´s Bluetooth is off, by the way).

I have a cll aout for Apple about this. This problem has being going on forever jsudging by these posts. Same issue brand new Apple aluminium keyboard and magic mouse. Brand new HD Duracell batteries and they were gone in a week although the Macook was shut down and not even in the same buidling. I'd used the keyboard for maybe three or four hours in total.

If this is a hardware fault it is a known one. I can't see how thios can be solved by a firmware update, and this issue has been hanging around unresolved for 2 years now.

The Apple guy told me to do a P RAM reset, which i already suggested before.

I did, and the Keyboard turned from 38% to 100%. That´s a couple of days ago, not so much, maybe 5 or so.

Today it is- just from yesterday´s 100% to today: 23%.

The Trackpad has new batteries- cheaper ones- which it already ate off 5 %, meaning it is 95% now- within

7 days.

I can bring both back, but i wonder if it would change, as you suggest- it might not only be related to these two models i own so far.

... oh no: It is 14 days since the Keyboard reseted to 100%.

All in all, the Keyboard runs since nearly a month, now saying it has 23% left.

My experience is similar to many of the posters.

I have a two battery aluminium keyboard and use an Apple charger. The problem does appear to be related to software. I say this because if I replace my keyboard batteries the charge is shown as 100% for a few days but drops to 17% and stays there.

If I then take out the batteries, measure the voltage (usually about 1.4 vdc) and put them back in the keyboard without recharging them the keyboard values will rise often back to 75%.

I intend to repeat this process until the battery voltage as measured, drops or my patience is exhausted. The magic mouse will get the same treatment until the two indicators agree.

I will report back with my results.

Don't throw those batteries away - use logic not landfill!

... I´ve spoken to Apple, as written, and in the meantime my keyboard now stays at 100%, and Trackpad at 61%.

Keyboard is running since 4/7/12, and Trackpad since 4/14/12.

To me, that sounds better/ realistic time to go, so i pay attention to it, but the P RAM Reset has seemed to work for me.

I think I found it.

I solved the batteries draining eliminating the possibility that bluetooth devices could wake up the computer.

Go to bluetooth set up and uncheck the box.

I did so and the energy consumption returned normal

In my case as the item was under warranty Apple agreed to replace it. This solved the problem and I've had a couple of weeks out of the supplied batteries and loads of use. Sweet. I would say though this was an extreme case of batteries being completely depleted in 24 hours. Apples service was exemplary. Lesson? If you've tried all the software steps shown on this thread don't rule out the hardware.

The PRAM reboot did not help me. Have MacBookAir with Mac os x 10.7.5, brand new keyboard (wireless without number pad) and magic mouse.
The battery started at 100% freshly charged this morning at 9.30, now at 12.02 it is at 15%! Does not live the whole day!

Batteries? Keyboard? Magic Mouse?

Has anyone tried to update to snow lion, will that do the trick?

I think Lions would get a little bit chilly in the snow...... Perhaps you mean Mountain Lion?

I get really confused with this animal trend in os names. Numbers are more logical ;-)

I burn through a battery a week with the wireless mouse. Can practically watch the % drop.

Environmentally very wasteful - whether using rechargables or not. Apple needs to address this.

Keyboard battery life is better than the mouse, but still unacceptable.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM ?

Yes. Did not work. But it turns out the keyboard was faulty. Had it replaced and everything is ok! ;-)
