Importing mpeg1 movie files

I'm trying to import mpeg movie files into fcp. The files import and the video is there and plays however i'm getting no audio?? I tried dropping the file in the timeline and that didn't work either. Also it wouldn't play in the timeline without dropping frames. Any suggestions would help.

Welcome to the Boards 🙂

Sounds like whatever flavor of MPEG you are using is not one that can be used (audio track not coming through) and/or easily workable (dropped frames), you may need to use Mpeg Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/ to convert to something that can be used in Final Cut

Thanks i just did that, before getting to your response. So now the audio and video are both there, but when i drop the clip into the timeline , it is still dropping frames. Do you have a suggestion as to what compression setting i should while exporting to quicktime? Will this help with the dropped frames?

As Nick mentioned DV will probably be fine, and kind of hard to tell without knowing the system. I will often do conversions to less compressed Codecs so that any changes I make may hold up a bit more. At this point everything I do just gets turned into ProRes when I can, maybe overkill, but it works for me 🙂
