I want to save my finished projects to an external hard drive. Do I save the project before or after I run it through IDVD? Or do I save both versions, which uses tons of space?
As it stands, there is no way for you to save an iMovie project. There is no "Save" in the "File" menu. It auto-saves every time you edit...you hope. That means that can't create different versions of the same file, do back ups nor give the movie projects the name you want. iMovie is a disgrace to Apple's previous dedication to excellence in product design.
Hmmmm-
I just look in my project library, control-click on the project, and select Duplicate from the drop down menu. That duplicates the project allowing me to make multiple versions.

To change the name of the project, simply click on the name and it will allow you to change it.
Thanks for the info Meg. Not sure if you helped the previous writer but you saved me having to rebuild my entire project just to make two versions of the same movie. Thanks again!
When you export a project from iMovie and also when you create a project in iDVD you are given the option of Where to save it.
Pick your external drive.
The previous writer, well.....
