blank quicklook

hey all,
i'm pretty good at troubleshooting these things by myself usually but i have exhausted all that i know at this point:

whenever i try to quicklook anything, that audio comes through (if it is a movie or song) but the place for the graphic is always blank. It is blank for everything: pdfs, documents, songs, videos, etc.

here's what i have tried:
- i relaunched the finder
- i created a separate new account, logged into that and it still was a problem
- removed all the plugins from the quicklook folder and then relaunched finder

none of these have worked

i did just recently (last week) do a time machine restore for my whole system....

are there any other options other than wiping hte hard drive and then reinstall from the time machine backup again?

appreciate any relevant advice you have to offer!

Thanks
~Will-i-am~

Hi,

This may help, it may not;

firstly, I noticed that Quick Look is slower in 10.6.1 - This seems odd considering my hardware (8-cores, 6BG RAM, 512MG Graphics). - I'm holding off on 10.6.2 since after some looking I've found it won't fix this issue.

Generally I've found that these types of problems are caused by a corrupt or misplaced file in the OS directory, I know certain applications (such as Microsoft Office) like to "embed" themselves, and move files around when installing, and install also files in odd directories.

My best advice is:

Disk Utility.

*Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility*

When its open try running the 'repair disk permissions' (which resets default permissions to files etc.) option, if that fails to solve the issue, I'd then suggest running 'repair disk' (which fixes the file-system and subsystem.)

Note: you'll need to startup from the install DVD to repair the disk file-system.

Hope this is helpful.

Regards,

Peter.

hey
thanks for the response....i don't know why i didn't think to do disk permissions repair and repair disk

well i booted up onto my diskwarrior DVD also and did a rebuild optimized command

i then booted up to my Mac OS X DVD and did a repair disk and repair permissions....

i had a LOT of errors. It kept saying something to the effect of:

SUID /xxx/x/xx/ this is something something and can't be repaired

it probably had 40 or more of those...

if disk utility can't fix those, what can or does that just require a new install?

p.s. forgot to change my status thing...i am running 10.6.2

Thanks

I too have the same issue. I also did a full system restore using Time Machine (I upgraded my Hard Drive). I opened the console to see what the error was and it says:
"[QL] Display bundle <QLGenericDisplayBundle: 0x1099ab1e0> did not return a layer although it was required to because it did not return a view either."

I just repaired permissions and it didn't do anything

Same problem, I'm also getting blank previews in Finder and Quicklook. I just restored my system from time machine about 2 hours ago. I had messed up my permissions so bad that the computer would get stuck at the load up screen. After restoring, everything seemed fine except Quicklook and Finder Previews are blank. As for repairing disk permissions I have the same problem as you, 30 or so that are modified and will not be fixed. Disk Verify says I'm all good. SO WHAT GIVES. I hope this is resolved soon.

It seems everyone who is having the problem has recently restored their system with Time Machine. I'm pretty sure I updated to 10.6.2 before I did the restore, and I didn't notice any problems with Quicklook. I also have Bootcamp and restored that partition using WinClone but I don't think that is relevant to the problem everyone is having. I hope someone who is more knowledgeable about the workings of Quicklook would help.

Update: I tried previewing a video in coverflow mode by pressing the little play button that appears. What's interesting is that the main icon turns black and doesn't play the video, BUT the reflection does play the video. I also get the following, slightly different error in the console:
"[QL] Display bundle <QLMovieDisplayBundle: 0x121fb9ee0> did not return a layer although it was required to because the current mode only supports layers."

I have exactly the same problem. I replaced the hard drive in my MacBook while I was running 10.6.2, did a full restore in Time Machine, and now both Quick Look and preview in Finder are blank.

Verifying the disk comes back fine, and I've repaired permissions, but no change.

Also, maybe unrelated, but my 'private' folder is now visible at my root directory and Photo Booth has stopped working.

If I boot off my old HD still running 10.6.2 everything is fine. So something obviously happened during the TM restore...

Update: I have noticed that if I select more than one image and then click the 'index sheet' button, I can see the previews. Does anyone else see the same thing?

Also, I'm not very knowledgeable about the inner workings of OS X but I found a process called qlmanage and typing qlmanage -h in terminal brings up some stuff to manage Quicklook. I've tried reloading the generator list and removing the cache to no avail.
