I used Virtual PC 7 to put XP Pro on my iMac G5 today. However, I'd like to get Windows 7 running on the G5 if possible. I tried using Virtual PC to do so, but to no avail. Is this even possible? If so, what am I missing?
While it may be technically possible to do it somehow, it would not be very satisfactory with either Vista or 7. Since an iMac G5 is PowerPC, it is actually doing emulation to pretend to be an Intel computer's hardware in software. This is very processor intensive. If you try to run Vista or 7, with all the visual
eye-candy, on top of the emulation, it will just bog down and be unusable. Even with Windows XP, it runs much better under Virtual PC if you use the Windows
classic appearance, which makes it look more like Windows Me/98. I would stick with XP on your iMac G5 with Virtual PC. Max out the RAM and give the Windows XP 1GB.
Intel iMacs can run Windows without doing any emulation, because the hardware is actually Intel-based hardware.
