Need help - Change iTunes default view when opening (9.0.2.25)

How to change the default view when launching iTunes? It now opens in grid view with albums shown sorted alphabetically. I want to have it always open with the list view displayed and sorted with the last added (my newest music) at the top. I manually do this three-step operation each time I open iTunes. Thanks...

Surely there must be a way to change the default view... does anyone have an idea how to do this?

I think the issue might be more that it seems a bit odd to us that your view is changing from what it was when you closed iTunes. When I close my iTunes and launch it again, the view I have is the same one I had when I closed iTunes.

Walk us through what happens when you're launching 9.0.2.25 ... does anything seem oddly different about the process than what you were seeing when you were launching your previous version?

With previous versions, I don't think that the views were saved either; at least I feel like I have been doing the same three-step process (to show my music in a list sorted by date added, newest first) for a long time - since I've had Vista. No matter how I alter the view, once I close iTunes and relaunch it, the default grid view is displayed. The headers and columns are remembered OK. Just that when opened, I always have to see artists starting with "A", which is a useless way for me to navigate to the last two albums I just bought.... Thanks.

Okay, I just doublechecked again, with your precise view desires set up, and my iTunes relaunched in list view, sorted on date added, most recent items first.

If it's been doing this to you for a number of versions, what springs to mind is that you've got some subtle damage to an iTunes preference file, which is causing iTunes to "forget" how it was set up to view things every time iTunes shuts down. (Since a preference file usually isn't touched by an iTunes version update, a subtle problem with pref files can persist for several versions of iTunes.)

Still, before checking on that we'd better check to see if this is a user-account-specific issue for you. (If this happens to you in multiple different user accounts on the PC, it's unlikely to be a pref file problem, since each different user account has its own set of preference files.)

From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
Open "Add or remove user accounts" (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open "User Accounts". Then open "Manage another account").
Select "Create a new account" and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
Log into the newly created user account.
Launch iTunes. Eventually it will open to a blank library. (Don't be alarmed, your existing content is in the other user account.)
Import a CD into the blank iTunes (or otherwise add some content there).

Now, arrange your view as you desire ... and then quit and relaunch iTunes in the new user account. Did your view "stick" in the new user account?

Thanks for the help - iTunes under the new user account DOES open to the last view setting displayed....

Looking forward to your suggestions to help fix the preference file for my account. Hopefully, I wont lose the ratings and play counts I've accumulated over the last four years!

Again - thanks for looking into this.

Righty ho ... the technique you need is described in the "Remove iTunes Preference files" section of the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:

[iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717]

Before starting out of that, set the PC up to view hidden files and folders, as per the description at the beginning of the "User-specific troubleshooting" section.

*Some heads-ups before proceeding*

This should not touch your ratings or playcounts (I think that's kept in the library files rather than the pref files ... at any rate, I tested deleting the pref files on my XP set-up earlier today and my play counts and some ratings I mocked up both survived.)

What you do have to be careful of are any custom preferences (EQ, imports, etc) you have set up. Take a note of those, because rebuilding the relevant prefs returns all such prefs to their default settings. You may need to set up any such preferences all over again.

You may also need to reinstall any third-party plugins afterwards.

The test you need to do (after moving a pref folder out on to the desk top) is to open iTunes twice. The first time you open iTunes, the pref files that you dragged away are rebuilt (and take their defaults). So, then you set the view the way you want it, quit and reopen iTunes, and then check to see if the view "sticks" for you on that second launch.

I'd like to be able to tell you which set of prefs relate specifically to views ... but on XP, the pref files are in a different place than they are on vista, and I'm not sure which XP set maps to which Vista set.

Things to expect during the pref file rebuild ... moving one set to the desktop (on XP) causes the setup assistant to run during the rebuild. Avoid saying yes if it asks you to import all the media files on your PC into iTunes. Otherwise, you'll end up duplicating all your content in you iTunes library. Moving the other set of prefs to the desktop (on XP) means that you have to agree to the licence agreement again.

Good luck! (It's really all a bit less fearsome than it sounds.)
