Hi all - not strictly Snow Leopard related but.. I've been offered a Macbook at a really good price, is it possible to tell if its OK from its serial number?
Just one more thought for you. Did you know Apple sells refurbished Macs at quite a good discount? These are new machines that have been returned for replacement for one reason or another. They are refurbished and thoroughly tested before being resold and come with all the goodies new Macs come with including the full warranty. I've not bought one myself but search these forums and you'll find many satisfied customers for refurbs. Here's a link to the Apple store showing a machine like the one you are looking to buy.
Did you run a S/N check with the local bobbies....that would seem to be the most prudent approach if you wanted to actually know if it's been nipped, I'd think.
Used to be a list on the 'net, but I've had no need so I can't say much other than Google's your friend, sorry.
Just remember that owners have ways to check on laptops that have gone missing...
The machine was offered without a power supply and by my way of thinking, only a stolen machine would be offered like that, I really cant think of any other reasonable explanation.
Shame there's no central register of rogue machines however.
The Level 4 and 5 users have asked the hosts about stolen Macs. They told us that Apple does not track stolen property. If you're going to check anywhere, try the local police. They may have a national registry of items with their related serial numbers that have been reported stolen.
Just curious, but how did you manage to get the machine's serial number? Seems to me that if it's not legit, the seller would not pass the SN to you in the first place and in such a case you'd simply decline the offer.
No, there isn't one--according to my search. But, if you Google on "serial number look up mac," then you will find a lot of links, one of which may help you.
Good point, I doubt he's the sharpest tool in the box but I'm passing on this and am off to the apple store in London, a bit more money but who needs the grief 🙂
