Shut down during firmware update

I was updating to the newest firmware for my macbook A1181 2ghz Intel core 1gb ram which supposedly fixes the random shutdown issues i was having. After it ran all night downloading and installing every other update i restarted then i got the firmware dialog which gave me instructions to install the new firmware something like "hit shutdown and hold the power button for 5 secs and wait till it updates" anyways I shut it down held the power for 5secs and it went into firmware update then when the progress bar was halfway through it ofcourse randomly shut down and now i cant start it at all. I already tried resetting the smc and the pram but i dont think thats working since it will either shutdown immediately or stay on but the screen will be off. If i hold the power button down it will stay on for a while but the screen wont be on and it doesnt seem to respond. When i turn it on it will make a whirring sound from the disk drive or fan then turn off.
