iphone 3gs first charge

when the iphone is switched off and its charging. should i get an indicator on the main screen showing its charging, like a big green bar, or should the phone screen remain off while its being charged? is that normal. because mines if off while its charing, i don't see any sign of it being charged while the phone is off and its plugged into the wall charger.

That is normal. when you first plugged in, you will get a big battery bar and then the screen will go off (depending on your timer). The only way to know if it is finished is to check periodically. Alternatively, I use a free App called Battery Magic which sounds an alarm when Iphone is full etc...

People will have different opinions on this. When I got my 3GS, I simply let it charge while I synced with iTunes and then went about using it thru my day. Came back and charged again when the level was low.

Just make sure you calibrate your battery in the first few days (drain the battery all the way to zero until the phone shuts down and then charge it for a good 4 hours until it reaches 100%). It will help you get an accurate battery level percentage indicator.

Similar to michie, I just connected to PC to activate and update it to 3.1.2 (was 3.1.1 as it came) and let it sit there to charge. Used it throughout the day until it is fully discharge and since then no problem. I definitely discharge once a month according to Apple's link and advice.
