Tascam FW-1082 Control Surface Not Seeing Audio Mixer

Setting up a Tascam FW-1082 with a new MacPro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and FCP 7.0.1 (current). FCP sees the Tascam control surface -- I have transport controls, and the master fader is up and working, but I cannot seem to associate the audio mixer channels to the surface faders. Have we lost the Tascam device in Snow Leopard?

Well, just got it. Never used it. SL is installed. Sooo... lemme ask: after associating the Tascom surface with FCP, if it was worjing correctly, when you bring up a typical FCP timeline (let's say, two video tracks, and four audio tracks), the faders should all "snap to" and follow the timeline. so, if you have a little music that you want to ride under and over dialogue, you can do that in real time, right? That's the way it works typically?

I am so close -- current firmware, current driver for the Tascam (1.6), really current OS 10.6.2 (and that may be the problem), all the software switches thrown according to instructions. I have transport control, and master fader control, BUT the channel faders are not communicating with FCP. They do light up MIDI transmission, however, when touched. Seems to be an assignment thing, but I have no idea where you assign a specific FCP function to a MIDI channel to relate the fader to the FCP Audio Mixer. Guesses, gurus?

Alas, the Tascam FW-1082 is never going to work with Snow Leopard because Tascam/Teac have discontinued support for it. I'd already been disappointed at reading the addendum on this page:

http://www.tascam.com/article;34,2034,3800.html

And I got the following mail reply to my inquiry to Tascam (downgrading to Leopard I would do, but I will not downgrade my Mac Pro from 12GB RAM to 4GB!):

Dear Mrs Noort,

Due to a general incompatibility with Apple's new 64-bit Audio Core engine, which cannot be resolved through an updated driver, we have decided to stop further driver development for the FW-1082.
If Final Cut Studio 3 runs on Leopard (OS 10.5..), there should be no problems in conjunction with this program.
The driver v.1.60 will work under Leopard up to a max. system RAM of 4 GB.
