whining noise when connected to car stereo system.

I have the 3gs and have purchased the TomTom car kit from my local Apple Store. There is a whining noise transmitted to the car stereo with the iphone in the car kit, the mini usb charger plugged in to the lighter socket and a 3.5mm shielded cable plugged in the car kit and the auxiliary jack of the car stereo. I have returned one car kit for exchange but the issue exists with the replacement as well. The noise issue does not exist using a Belkin Tune Base Direct. My question is could this be an issue with my iPhone or is it something inherent with the TomTom Car Kit?

does the whining change pitch or volume as you rev the engine?

quite often the noise is interference from the cars power supply (the alternator)

if the car kit will work passively without power try unplugging and playing some music.

i'm not sure but you may be able to get some device that plugs in between the cigarette lighter and the power supply that can stop this.

hope this helps

Thanx for your responses, but I purchased the TomTom Car Kit to enhance GPS navigation, whish performs effectively, and I have also toyed with other connections(i.e.:Belkin Tune Base Direct and 3.5mm cable to aux. jack) with which whinning is not an issue. Also, I have searched for a 3.5m in line filter for alternator noise to no avail, I have doubts this would eliminate noise in this configuration. Any other suggestions?

Hi,
If the whining noise is related to the engine revs you might check in with an auto parts store or car sound installer. Your car may have some bad wiring . Older car? They will have some noise suppression products. This is an old problem. I used to have to put in resistor plugs and wires to keep my stereos quiet. That was back when we had points instead of electronic ignition. There are products for the charging system as well.

good luck

the whining noise comes from the FM transmitter
the way to avoid this is to use a battery powered transmitter
some models of cars have this problem Ford being one of them
even the 2000 up models
on eBay you can buy FM transmitters that plug in to the i pods i phones
and use the power from i pod/i phone
this worked for me
hope this helps

I had this same problem and found the Griffin Noise Reducing Auxillary Cable. You can order from Griffin's website, but I was lucky enough to find one at Car Toys - no other retailer seems to carry this. After connecting this cable in place of a standard aux cable, my sanity is back - no more whining or interference noise whatsoever! Get the cable and save yourself the headaches. It makes the TomTom kit perfect! TomTom should start including this cable as a package product because everywhere I've read, people are having this exact problem.

I've found that the whining noise was associated only with my Griffin PowerJolt SE car charger (with both my iPhone 3G or my wife's 3GS) in both our Honda Fit and Toyota Sienna using a quality auxiliary cord connections to the vehicle audio system. I've swapped out other (even cheapo) chargers and they don't introduce this ground loop artifact. I'd suggest trying a different charger. I bought 2 Belkin chargers that have double USB connections so we can charge one phone while listening to music or using a GPS app on the other. A bit more money, but much better, no sound problems. Funny that Griffin makes the noise reducing cable, and one of the chargers that I found was associated with the problem.
