Getting triangle exclamation ! symbol at startup with 10.6.2
After upgrading to 10.6.2 in Mail I'm getting the triangle ! symbol only for the email account on my private website server. My two Gmail accounts are working like normal. The weird thing is that if I click on the Get Mail button it will connect like normal and lose the triangle symbol. It only has this problem at startup every time. Even when I press the Get Mail button at startup it will still give me the triangle symbol so it seems that it has a problem connecting the first time but no problem afterwards.
This was not a problem with 10.6.1 so I believe it's related to 10.6.2 because I really haven't changed anything else on my computer.
2.8 GHz 15" MacBook Pro 4GB RAM,
Mac OS X (10.6.2)
That is a PPP account? Mine have been doing that from time to time (long before 10.6.2) and the network occasionally has trouble connecting to the accounts and perhaps times out. However, a change in Mail concerns password authentication methods and this was made more secure. It may be this that is giving you that first-time problem. Check in the Mail >Account preferences under the Advanced button, and confirm that the right method is selected.
I saw this information on a KB article but cannot find it right now, but I did find a link to
a CNET article which has about the same (the KB article link in the article seems to be the wrong one).
OK, although that CNET article is helpful
the Apple KB one has some useful information at the end (#5)
I've contacted my web host provider and they said I have the right authentication method so I don't know if that is the issue. It was working perfect until 10.6.2 update.
Not to hijack this thread, but for others having the same problem - you may need to delete the POP account and recreate it - move your Emails to a 'On your Mac' folder first. It took me 2 tries, however with Mail crashing on me the first time trying to save the new account.
Good call, Dave. We sometimes have something in the settings that just can't be tracked down. I have done this a couple of times with the MobileMe account on the iPhone and when 10.6 arrived, I made identical (not duplicate) network locations as the originals at my office just refused to work.
