My screen SUDDENLY turned BLUE-- what should I do???

Hi Everyone.

Okay, so I was using Photoshop, editing some work, and checking my email on Safari. When suddenly out of nowhere my screen blanked and went totally blue.

I clicked around, and after a few seconds my login screen popped up. And when I logged back in all my programs had been shut down (which s u c k s because I didnt save my photoshop work-- ugh, why cant photoshop have auto-recovery?!).

So basically my computer reset itself on its own... and I have nooo idea why. Could someone please clue me in on why this happened, and what I can do to prevent this in the future?

Hello a:

There is no way, from your post, to determine what happened. Guessing is not helpful to you.

I have no idea whether the Photoshop application had a problem or not.

You might look at log files to see if something pops out.

There are no dumb questions...answers, yes, but not questions.

how do i go about checking log files and what should i look for?

Go to utilities>console. There will be a long list of logs. Take a look at the crash reporter. Look at the console and all messages about the time you had the problem. I cannot really indicate what to look for as I do not know what happened.

Usually what this means is that the loginwindow process has crashed, which logs you out. Because you're not logged in any more, all your programs get killed at the same time.

If it's only ever happened the one time, I wouldn't worry about it too much, just log back in and go back to work. If it happens a lot, look at the crash logs in the Console app from your Utilities folder. Look for the crash logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter and /Library/Logs/CrashReporter.

If you can't figure out how to read them, post them here and there's likely to be someone who can see if there's useful information in them.

I also looked at my console messages and stopped reading at about 6:30 and don't pick back up until about 8:30 (after my system "crashed")....

If needed I can post those notes as well....

What version of Photoshop was it? Any other applications running at the same time, particularly any that are older and might not be Intel native?

A Google search (UCKeyTranslate crash) turns up a few hints. One is that it might be related to running older PowerPC applications via Rosetta. There seem to be lots of reports of problems with Excel 2004 and Eudora, both PPC apps. Others report that it appears to be a problem with duplicate fonts, and that resolving font problems with Font Book fixes it. Another person claims to have been successful in stopping the crash if he removes all PowerPC code from applications (not a great idea unless you know what you're doing).

Since you've only had the one, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you start to get more, then I'd be concerned and maybe look into some of the potential solutions found around the web.

P.S. -- In my original post, I thought it would be the loginwindow process, but I was wrong. It was the window server. Different process, same basic result. The apps all depend on the window server to display their windows. So when the window server dies, so do the apps.

This is happening to one of my iMacs at work also. The only common thing common about this, is that I had to install Rosetta to run an old program.. has any one who's having this problem had to do a Rosetta install?
