    Hey, just found this thread.

Add me to the list. When I received my 27" Corei7 iMac in November (about the time this thread was started), I soon noticed the cover glass was cracked in the lower right (not lower-left) corner of the screen. Apple pain for FedEx to ship it back and replace it with another 27" Corei7, which took a couple weeks.

Have been fine since, and no graphics anomalies.

And you can add me too. I've had five desktop Macs, two laptops, and 6 iPods over the years. We've lived abroad and shipped Macs back and forth. NEVER had a problem. After much soul searching and concern regarding the reported problem with cracked 27 inch screens, I went ahead and bought a new 27-inch: 3.06GHz iMac from my local Apple Store. Last evening, after they had completed the file transfer from my old Mac, I picked my new one. The staff loaded it into my car and I drove the 3 or 4 miles to my home and carefully unloaded it and carried it into my home office. Then again carefully removed it from the box and put it on my desk. I peeled back the film and there, to my great dismay, was a 2 inch crack in the bottom left corner.

My local store has said they will take it back and replace it. They indicate that I will be able to pick up the new machine by dinner time today.

Even if all goes well, I am feeling very insecure about my purchase. With all the instances of this problem that have been reported, one would think that Apple would make a statement acknowledging the issue. When I spoke to the salespeople in the store about the problem before I purchased the 27 inch, they downplayed the issue and said that it had only happened to a very few machines worldwide and that Apple would make good if something went awry. That eased my concerns at the time but now that I have been directly affected, my faith in Apple has been bruised to say the least.

As I indicated above, I am a loyal Mac user and have traveled the globe with Macs since 1987. This is the first time that my confidence has been shaken. I am seriously considering replacing the 27 inch with a 21.5 inch. My choice of the big screen was less necessity than desire and I am concerned what could be my experience in a year or so the next time I have to move. Sure Apple Care will make good but I feel that if there's a flaw in design or packaging that Apple owes it to purchasers to solve the problem rather than simply make repairs and replacements. Something is at issue with these 27 inch screens.

Apple will not, (nor should they) say there is a problem. (unless they are all faulty) If they even hinted at a problem, just about every person who bought one would return it wanting a new one, even if their machine worked perfectly!

Just think how many machines are working fine and we don't hear about it.

All machines are not problematic and we have no idea what the percentage of machines are faulty. Nothing is perfect. Apple stands behind the product and that is all we can ask for.
My i7 is due next week. If it is broken, apple will replace it. I'm not worried...life will continue just fine.

I think the glass cracking is down to temperature changes or the glass is too thin. It is also likely there is too much pressure on the glass, causing it to crack. I don't plan on buying an iMac because my eMac works and the trouble with these machines anyway is putting me off. Also they have been known to be dead on arrival. I would advise people to wait until Apple bring out a new revision wish will hopefully be better.

ou will notice that those of us who have posted here regularly at one time have now gone.

There is a reason for that--things are MUCH better. It has been widely talked about in the industry, and the 27" iMac is one of the best desktop computers you can buy, from ANY manufacturer.

I can say from experience this is an outstanding machine, and you should buy with confidence.

Not another me too post. However, my iMac also has a cracked screen in the lower left hand corner. Luckily the store is 15 min away. I took it to the store and the folks at the Genius Bar replaced the glass. To be honest, I don't know if the it arrived that way or happened later on. If its the latter, I would be more concerned.

In either case, I am VERY concerned about the hardware quality of this 27" iMac.

I also own a 13" MacBook and iPhone and have been happy with them. The jury is still out on the 27" iMac.
