Can't open zipped files

I can't open zipped files that have been sent to me. I have found the files I saved in Archive Utility and when I try to open them a dialogue box says the default app is BOMArchive Helper. If I click that something I cant read flashes on the screen but nothing opens. If I try to open with Word a dialogue asks what I want to open with giving options such as MS-DOS Text, RTF,HTML document etc. If I click on these a word document opens full of gooble de gook

Is that the only choice?

See 'Archive Utility' or Stuffit or....?

To reset the default, select a zip file in the Finder and right/control click...then choose 'Get Info'
- 1/2 way down in that dialog you should see an option for 'Open with:' Use that to change the default and to apply to all similar type files.

Did that and set default to Microsoft Word but still get the dialogue box titled convert file then the document full of gobbledegook. I had the exact same thing when I tried to restore my address book from a Western digital external hard drive. Western digital said that was an operating system problem

The zip ending determines the file type. And as OS X tries to pair file types with their corresponding applications it displays that icon. You can always open them with almost any application of your choice. StuffIt has "claimed" to be the right application when you installed it.

I think the Archive Utility (10.6) is the successor of the BOMArchiveHelper (10.4) and therefore the same.
