run the following command in terminal

defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Return-Receipt-To" = "your_receipt@goes.here"; "Disposition-Notification-To" = "your_receipt@goes.here"; }'

and substituting "your_receipt@goes.here" with your own email address. However, this will cause Mail to send a receipt request EVERY time you send an email.

also keep in mind that the email clients of your email recipients have to support receipt notification AND it has to be turned on. if they don't support it (Mail doesn't btw) or the feature is turned off this will not work and there is absolutely nothing you can do to get receipt notifications.

Thank you! Sounds complicated (for me). What are best email programs for MAC?

Mail works fine for most people. and it's integrated with the system which is always a plus. there is also Microsoft Entourage which is part of MS Office and Mozilla Thunderbird. some people love Eudora but AFAIK, its development has been discontinued.
