IPhone 3GS Bluetooth

I am informed by Apple UK and by Apple in the USA that the great IPhone 3GS only has bluetooth capability to pair with an Apple bluetooth headset! It cannot even pair with the bluetooth on my Toyota Prius (which, I believe, is one of the MOST popular cars in the USA). This fault renders the phone useless for most modern cars: Lexus, Volvo, VW, Honda etc. WHAT ARE APPLE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS? I am so disgusted that I am considering sending the phone back to my carrier (Orange) and asking for a Nokia or a Blackberry instead. Maybe it is time for Apple to concentrate on this issue rather than more and more Apps....even my 6 year old Samsung will pair with my car.I do not want to use a headset, I want to pair with my car.....any comments anyone and how about a response from Apple......seh@shaydon.co.uk

Not sure who 'at Apple' told you that, but you are misinformed. The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS can pair just fine with both headsets and auto bluetooth systems, either for calls or for streaming music via Bluetooth.

By the way, Apple will not respond to you in these forums. I suggest you try calling AppleCare for assistance.

Heard the expression RTFM? Try starting on page 56:

*+Bluetooth Devices*+
+You can use iPhone with hands-free Bluetooth headsets and _Bluetooth car kits_. iPhone also supports Bluetooth stereo headphone devices when using iPod... Connect with iPhone: See the documentation that came with the headset or car kit.+

So, you may have two FMs to R.

Not true. Apple don't even make a Bluetooth headset for starters, and the iPhone works with hundreds of third-party Bluetooth headsets, stereo headphones, car kits etc.

It cannot even pair with the bluetooth on my Toyota Prius

Have you even bothered to do any troubleshooting? Or did you just try once, give up and come here in a tantrum?

This fault renders the phone useless for most modern cars:

Useless? A slight exaggeration I think... I use my iPhone in my car perfectly well, and my "modern" car doesn't even have Bluetooth. So to say it is "useless" is stupid.

I am so disgusted that I am considering sending the phone back to my carrier (Orange) and asking for a Nokia or a Blackberry instead.

Do that then, and be happy.

even my 6 year old Samsung will pair with my car.

If pairing with your car is the only reason you have a phone, why bother switching to an iPhone in the first place? Especially if your 6 year old Samsung did the job perfectly well...

Maybe it is time for Apple to concentrate on this issue rather than more and more Apps

Erm, Apple aren't making "more and more Apps" - out of the 100,000+ Apps on the AppStore, only FOUR are from Apple.

Ever considered the fact the problem might not be at Apple's end?

how about a response from Apple...... seh@shaydon.co.uk

This is a user-to-user forum. You're not speaking to Apple here. But good job on opening yourself up to getting on every spammers list by posting your email address to a public forum. D'oh!

I understand the frustration. I have 2 VW vehicles with factory installed bluetooth. My 3GS pairs with them but continuously connects and disconnects until the bluetooth system is no longer discoverable. I have been given two different iPhones, they both act the same. The last time I visited the "Genius" bar it was recommended that I buy a pre paid cellular phone to use in my cars.

I agree that Apple needs to concentrate on fixing the details as I am also considering giving up on the iPhone.

I have the same problem in my 2005 Prius. Every other phone has paired with the Prius flawlessly. Neither the 3G or the 3GS will. Or, rather, they will pair but not receive calls. Or there will be terrible noise before and during a call. It's totally unusable. I've tried three phones and talked to both Apple and Toyota. Of course they point fingers at each other. I know people with newer Priuses that pair fine.

It's not a deal breaker for me because I don't need to use the phone that much in the car. But it's annoying.

Actually, Apple no LONGER makes a headset. They used to have one.

The iPhone does indeed work, and in addition, it supports the PBA (Phone Book Access), as I've used this in a few cars, to dial my contacts without ever touching my phone. Very nice feature and implementation.
