Itunes video playback has green screen

When I try to play videos in Itunes all I get is a green screen. I have tried almost every fix I have found but I can't seem to fix it. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 5160 running XP. My video driver is a XGI VolariXP vs.2.116DELL. My hardrive just recently corrupted, and I can't remember how I got rid of the green screen before.

Hmmmm. That sounds like a video driver problem, then ... but it certainly looks like your version 2.16c is the latest Dell driver for your Volari.

Sine we last spoke, a newer version of QuickTime has been released. (The latest version number is 7.6.5.) Among the release notes, it mentions that certain display problems have been addressed:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL837

But what they are describing there is a bit different from your situation (with video not playing well in iTunes).

Perhaps before trying a QuickTime upgrade, it might be best to quickly run a dxdiag on your PC to see if that finds anything amiss.

In your Start menu, click "Run", type dxdiag and hit enter.

Work through the tabs of the troubleshooter. Are any problems reported? If so, what does dxdiag say about them?

Okay. Backtracking to something you said earlier:

One thing I can't figure out is the videos will play(though they are jerky) when the video driver is uninstalled.

Can you get a similar result if you try the *Disable DirectX in QuickTime* section of the Apple troubleshooting document, Sportsman? Quit iTunes prior to making the change in the QuickTime control panel, and try restarting the PC prior to launching iTunes again:

[Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows XP and 2000 video playback performance issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1386]

(Wondering here if there's some sort of kinky interaction going on between DirectX and video drivers on the system ... we can have one or the other but not both.)

Everything seems to be pointing towards the video drivers ... it might also be worth checking if you're getting similar sorts of green screens with your WMP, as per the following Microsoft document (they've got some suggestions we haven't looked at yet):

[The screen may appear black or green during playback when the Windows Media Player control is embedded in a Web page|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909554]

... but, I've also been checking on the Dell website, and it looks like there could be some strange issues that crop up for folks if the drivers on your Inspiron model are reinstalled in the wrong order after an operating system reinstall:

[Technical Support for Inspiron 5160: How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order|http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c =us&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen]

... so I'm not sure which of those two directions it would be most prudent for you to pursue next. (We're pretty much at the extreme edge of my technical competence with video things now, and I don't want to put you wrong, Sportsman.)

So, if nobody else here drops by to contribute any additional advice, I think it might be a good idea to check in with a Dell technician for an opinion on what to try next.

Hi. I was having this problem forever and I tried re-installing everything and nothing seemed to work. Then I went into my iTunes, clicked on the view tab, then the visualizer tab and changed the setting from iTunes Visualizer to iTunes Classic Visualizer and my video returned immediately. I know this seems like a really stupid fix but it's what worked for me.

I had the same problem on my iPod Touch when watching podcasts. I thought there was something wrong with the Touch, but I was able to get the controls up ovet top of the green screen. Some music videos and podcasts did not exhibit this problem.

I then found that I got the green screen when I watched the same podcasts in iTunes. That led me to believe that somehow the podcast files were corrupted, so I deleted them and re-downloaded them, but I still have the problem.

Perhaps this information is helpful, as I too am looking for a resolution to this problem.
