Controlling Logic With Yamaha KX8 MIDI Controller

Hi there. I just bought the Yamaha KX8 MIDI Controller. It feels great. The only thing is it has transport buttons on the keyboard ie play, f/f, r/w, stop etc which are supposed to integrate with Logic. However when I press them they just trigger MIDI notes from whatever softsynth I am using at the time. I've chosen the Logic Pro template from within the keyboard. Does anyone know how to set this up? Many thanks, Ben.

Here is my setup: Yamaha KX8 to USB plug into Macbook Leopard 10.5.8, Macbook headphone jack (1/8 inch plug) to two small studio speakers using a splitter cable (1/8 inch-1/4 inch plug). I have garage band and logic express. All I want to do is hear the KX8 through the speakers right now...what am I doing wrong? I have installed "Yamaha Extensions for Steinberg DAW.mpkg" and
"Yamaha USB-MIDI v1.1.0.mpkg", but I haven't heard a sound out of them. I can play music through my speakers and it sounds great. But for some reason I can't make the KX8 play through the speakers...

Greetings,

I just bought me a Yamaha KX8 myself. I did plenty of shopping around for great weighted keys and controllers. I used to have a Keystation Pro 88 (not very good). The keys were okay, but bought it for all the wrong reasons, mainly knobs and buttons.

Anyway, the easy fix to your problem is quite easy. Simply go to your controller assignments and add your maps as you would with any other controller. One thing though, since you can't change control values on the buttons, its hard wired as on-off. If you say, map the mute and solo buttons to Logic, you'll get a momentary press effect. The way around it is, press and hold down the button to map, and de-activate the learn (Command+L).

Sometimes Logic loses track of the mapping values and you'll hear the keys playing again. Solution to that is to open your Controller Assignments again, and got to your maps and select "Yamaha KX Port 2". As it might say "Any" when you first start up Logic on a restart.

Hope this helps. And for the record, The Yamaha KX8 Keys are much better than Akai MPK88. Especially for the money, can't beat the KX8.

Cheers,

LGK
