Seagate and Verbatim portable hard-drives mysteriously renamed

I have two portable 320GB hard-drives: a Seagate FreeAgent Go and a Verbatim one.

Both have been working fine until a certain point where they have been mysteriously renamed everytime I mount them onto my Mac.

My Seagate hard-drive is named "FreeAgent Drive" and my Verbatim one is named "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk". However, my Mac automatically renames them as "FreeAgent Drive 1" and "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 1" everytime I mount them.

The trouble is that I have to manually rename them back to the form without the "1", or else my BitTorrent programs would not be able to recognize the destination download folders located on my hard-drives.

Also, even though I have renamed them EVERYTIME I mount the drives, my BitTorrent programs still recognize the name of my hard-drives with even larger numbers, i.e. "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5". If I don't rename my hard-disk every time before I start my BitTorrent, it will not be able to find the destination folders.

Some time ago I have been downloading to the same hard-drive, but the programs recognize it has "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 4". Since it now only recognizes it as "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5", whatever I've downloaded onto "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 4" are unretrievable and nowhere to be found. The problem is that it took up my hard-drive space!

Last problem with the Verbatim hard-drive is that it used to be able to put files into Trash and then I manually delete them later. However, suddenly it forces me to delete whatever I move to Trash immediately. I cannot leave anything from the Verbatim hard-drive in the Trash at all, unlike my Seagate hard-drive.

Thanks to anyone who could help solve this madness!

My desire is to let my Torrents continue. However, I know that all of them have been directed to "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5", which is an alias to my real hard-drive. Every destination path way has been directed to under "\Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5".

I would like to keep my files intact and best avoid any tedious changes of download destination because I have LOTS of Torrents going on.

I can live with temporary solutions until I finish them all. I just seriously need a final solution to get rid of ALL the NUMBERS and leave only the hard-drives' true file names behind.

Also, what has been going on?!

I'll tell you what I see . . . remember I have 2 hard-disks:

Folders:
FreeAgent Drive
Verbatim Removable Hard Disk
Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 2
Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 3
Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 4

Alias:
FreeAgent Drive 2
Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5
Macintosh HD

What should I do next?!!!

It looks like you've been hit by the "doppelganger" problem:

I'm not sure what to suggest regarding correcting that and still salvaging as much of your torrent material as possible. As you've probably guessed, some of will be within those folders in /Volumes.

In the future, I believe you can reduce the chances of a repeat if you don't let the torrent software run if those disks aren't mounted.

Thanks!

So I probably have to waiting until everything's settled with my Torrent programs, and THEN delete all the Folders in /Volumes and then do a reboot?

Will that making my hard-drives appear once more automatically as their own names without numbers? Although to the programs I'll have to redirect downloads to the physical hard-drives properly again, since I presume "Verbatim Removable Hard Disk 5" will no longer exist after I delete the Folders 1, 2, 3 and 4?

Thanks!

I suppose. Keep in mind that some of the torrent "pieces" may be in those folders within /Volumes. You could look, then at least delete the empty ones now. Since I'm not a torrent user, I'm not sure if you can consolidate pieces by copying them from local folders to an external drive.

Sounds like a plan...
