iPhone Deleted All My Music

I was crossing the border into Canada yesterday morning on a brief trip to obtain Tim Horton's Donuts while listening to a RadioLab podcast, I pushed the Artist button in the lower left and the "Updating Library Could Take a Few Minutes" message appeared, in about a minute my library popped up and says "NO MUSIC you can download music from iTunes" all my playlists are gone and so are all of my podcasts except all the RadioLab episodes.

My iPhone was just updated a week ago and has never done this before. In the About tab it says I have 0 songs and 15 podcasts but it also says I only have 2.4GB of my 14.6GB is available.

I plan to sync my iPhone to hopefully fix this issue, however it was very frustrating to lose all my music right when I wanted to listen to it. If I had been on a vacation or something it could have been disastrous!

This happened to me as well. It was right after I downloaded a podcast. The iPhone was not hooked up to my computer at all so it was not trying to sync. I pulled up my artists in the iPod app and it said that I had no songs (yet I had about 5 gigs worth before that podcast was downloaded).

I also experienced the issue that Sauer had regarding the available memory. It is as if my songs are there (taking up memory), but it sees none of them.

I had the same thing happen on the first day of a 3 week vacation - my iPhone running 3.1.2 displayed the message: "Updating Library Could Take a Few Minutes" then told me I have NO MUSIC!! Eeek! I spent days loading music for my trip!!

I sync my iPhone with my desktop computer which is 3000 miles away. I have a Mac laptop and when I plug in my iPhone it shows all my music -- in very light gray color.

So I know the music is on the iPhone -- I can't restore or get it back from my desktop -- how do I get the iPhone to recognize it?

The only solution I can come up with is to get a third party app that allows me to upload all my iPhone music to my laptop and the somehow reload it to my iPhone??

If anyone has any good ideas please let me know! thanks , Dan

It sounds like a bug in the 3.1.2 software -- I never had this problem with earlier software releases.

Has anyone contacted Apple support to see what they have to say?

The good thing is that I can see my music with iTunes and can copy it to my laptop with Senuti.

When I get time I'll contact Apple and see if they have any work arounds until it is fixed with the next software release.

I talked with Apple support yesterday - same story, they said then had never heard of this problem. The senior tech couldn't understand how iTunes on my laptop could see my music, but the iPod App said I had not music.

While talking to the tech guy I decided to try to run the iPod app while connected to iTunes. The first time the screen went white for 10 seconds and the app crashed and I ended up back at the home screen. I tried it a second time and Presto - all of my music was back!

SO HERE IS THE WORKAROUND: connect your iPhone to a computer you don't normally sync with. You can probably see your music in light gray. While connected, try running the iPod application a couple of times.

I happy to have my 17GB of music on my 3 week vacation! 🙂

I was also listening to a RadioLab when this happened to me (interesting I wonder if it was the same podcast). I tried connecting to a different computer and it my music is now back and working.

When I connected to any computer, it was freezing iTunes and I would have to force quit. When I plugged into an unfamiliar computer, it did the same thing. I turned on my iPod application while it was still plugged in and it was saying "Updating Library" I did a forced restart of my iPhone and when I turned it back on, my music was there. I am now going to try to update my phone on it's familiar computer. This problem REALLY ***** and I am curious why it has happened and how I can stop it from happening again. (Not listening to Radio Lab podcasts is out of the question... best show ever!!)

Having the same problem. Downloaded podcast onto my iPhone 3G from iTunes over wifi. iPod app crashed while loading, then only the recently downloaded podcast was available and everything else was gone. Still shows as having a lot of files on the iPhone.

Have reset and restarted iPhone, and per a suggestion in another thread tried buying a new song from iTunes to cause a reindex of the library file, but that did not cause anything to come back.

This problem is showing up in a couple of different forums.

This SAME exact thing happened to me as well. It's happened about 3 or 4 times in the last 6 months. And always just after I've downloaded a podcast. I download a podcast, go to listen to it and wham... everything in my music library gone!!

Sure I can restore my music from a backup or syncing again, but it's a real pain. If anyone knows why out there you'd rock if you'd tell us!!
