LaserWriter 4/600 Ps

A narrow black line began appearing on the right side of paper and is now widening. Can this be fixed?

I'm with Dave on this one. A dark line the entire length of the printed pages is most likely to be caused by a cartridge defect. If you have a genuine Apple cartridge, Apple has not offered those for sale in a long time, so seals and gaskets may be wearing out, even if it has lots of toner left. I have a cartridge with a dark line, and keep it on hand for printing bulky manuals where I don't care too much about print quality, but may need lots of pages.

This site lists all the known printers based on that 'marking engine". The cartridges for those other printers will interchange, such as the HP92274A cartridge for the HP laserjet 4MP.

Some (maybe all) printers based on the Canon LBP-PX engine:
Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS
Apple Personal LaserWriter 300
Apple Personal LaserWriter 320
Canon LBP-4 U
Canon LBP-430
Canon LBP-430w
Canon LBP-PX
Canon LBP-PX II
HP C2003a LaserJet 4L
HP LaserJet 4L
HP LaserJet 4ML
HP LaserJet 4MP
HP LaserJet 4P
Lasermaster Winprinter 1000

I can print a quark document using any font on my mac when I send it to my HP printer.
I can print a Word document using any font on my mac laser writer.
When I send the same document to my mac laser writer 4/600 it either refuses to print giving me the message “client error” or it may print not using the correct font.
It will print in courier or helvetica. That’s seems to be the extent.
This started after upgrading to Leopard 10.5.8.
It appears that the laser writer no longer is speaking to Quark 6.1. It is possible to get them on “speaking terms?”

There is not a lot of memory in the laserWriter 4/600. If you print a document that is too complex, it may not be able to print.

The documents you are describing sound like they are all text That does not seem so tough. Try pressing the "Preview" button in the Print dialog to create a .pdf, which will immediately be displayed in Preview. Then have Preview do the printing (either the big blue button in the lower left, or Choose Print from Preview's File menu) and see if it works any better.

A "desperation move" would be to reset the printer to clear all the accumulated fonts, then try the document from there.

I tried the pdf preview idea and was able to print. However, in the recent past I have created documents with clip art, photos and more than one font in the document and they printed without using the pdf. This non-printing is something that has just started occurring. It seems like it may be connected to upgrading to 10.5.8. But as I indicated before. this problem is with Quark. I can print as usual if I prepare a Word document with text, clip art, photo, etc. I prefer to publish in Quark. It just seems Quark and my printer are not in sync or something. I just now printed a photo using Quark. When I added some text to the document it refused to print. I will appreciate your input.

May I ask how you are managing to print on this printer, if you are printing from a modern mac like a QS G4 Powermac on Tiger? I am able to do it via a 7300 mac (running OS 9.1) and using a network to the 7300 from the G4 but would love to take the 7300 out of the loop!

I bought a reconditioned cartridge ages ago but I did not use it much. It was terrific for a while and suddenly (after a period of months of non-use, it started leaking the toner all over the show. I guess there is no check on how old the seals are in reconditioned cartridges? New are twice as expensive but maybe worth it? Cheapest new I have found is about $Australian140. Wonder if it is worth it? I have two perfectly good 4/600's and am loath to throw them out. But maybe I should! What do you think?

These are Postscript level 2 printers that do not support LPR/LPD. All these printers are LocalTalk printers. Except for those marked (Ethernet) they also need a converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk to print from Macs newer than the Beige G3 and with Mac OS X.

Personal LaserWriter NTR
Personal LaserWriter 320
LaserWriter Select 360
LaserWriter 4/600 PS

LaserWriter IIf
LaserWriter IIg (Ethernet)
LaserWriter Pro 600
LaserWriter Pro 630 (Ethernet)

Checklist for AppleTalk-over-Ethernet printing to LaserWriter

__ LaserWriter with Postscript level 2 or better
__ Converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk
cabled to Ethernet port or your Hub/Switch/Router with correct {straight/cross} cable
(A) Farallon Ethermac iPrint LT -OR-
(B) AsanteTalk
(C) LocalTalk Bridge software running in the background on an OS 9 Mac with a built-in round serial port
__ Ethernet port active, with IP address assigned, and AppleTalk checkbox checked
__ 4-wire phone cord, PhoneNet box and 120 Ohm terminator in the open Phone-cord socket; or serial cable if connecting only two round serial ports directly

If you anticipate moving to 10.6 Snow leopard, consider an Ethernet-to-(parallel or serial) Print Server for printers equipped with those ports. \[This solution does not work for the 4/600.]

Hi,
I did love my two PS 400/6 but had to send them to ****, because the build in memory was only 2 MB.
This was not enough for complex documents I created in Freehand and Canvas.
I was looking for more memory to upgrade the printers, but could not find it anywhere .

Now I use a 630 Pro and a 12/640. Both bought second hand of course. They do a real good job.
The 12/640 works as an IP-printer and the 630 Pro is connected to a print server (D-Link).
Output is fast and excellent.
The 400/6 printers are really "out of time".
