How long do your earbuds last?

I've had my iPhone since December and I'm on my third pair of earbuds. One pair came with, I replaced them, and now I have to replace again.

Sheesh!!!

So, my question is...is this the norm for you? If not, how do you keep your buds in working condition? When I get off the train, my only option is to wind the cord around my fingers and drop them in a pocket of my bag. Obviously, this isn't doing them any good. So, any recommendations?
