Contingency Table and Chi Squared Test functions

I have an assignment for a stats class in which I am supposed to create a contingency table and then perform a chi squared test from a spreadsheet that was created in excel or spss. The info opens fine in Numbers but I can't get the function tab to let me insert any new functions. Does anyone have an idea how to do this??? I am only supposed to compare two of the variables, so I think using COVAR would work fine in place of contingency...any thoughts?? Thanks!!
