Any Idea whats wrong with my mac?

The other day I was on the internet via firefox and every time i went to random internet pages, firefox would freeze and not unfreeze, making me have to force quit it. After several more attempts at going back on firefox the same thing would happen every time i went to specific random sites (random because there was no reason for those sites to make firefox crash). Assuming firefox was just being buggy I went on safari, however the same thing would happen when I went to random website (some sites that crashed firefox wouldn't crash safari and vice versa). So after a day or two of irritating web browser crashes I got the mcafee anitvirus program and scanned my mac. The scan ended with it finding one virus file and removing it. However my internet browsers continued crashing the same as before. I then tried uninstalling firefox and downloading it again, hoping that it would work better. It runs just as bad as before and now it takes a minute or two to open.

So basically I have no idea what's going wrong with my mac and I was wondering if you have any ideas as to what the problem is/how to fix it.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi Apple Vogt,

Sound to for a bad Cookie.

Open Finder window an go to Home_Folder>Library>Cookies

Now drag the Cookies.plist file to the Desktop "don't trash it"

Now open Safari again and try to visit the webpages where the problems started.

*Leave the Cookies.plist file* on the desktop until you posted back ...

Post back with the results.

Alright I put the cookies.plist file on the desktop and both browsers freeze the same as before. Also I've tried clearing the cookies previously, but it didn't fix the problem. What really puzzles me is that both browsers are having the same problem, and the fact that I uninstalled firefox and downloaded a new version but it still had the same problem.

Have you tried restarting your computer? Sometimes this fixes browser hiccups.

You can also try - Booting from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.

Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Repair permissions after you reach the desktop- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
