Can't connect to download.microsoft.com - can't download MS Office updates

I have a customer who is using a Powerbook G4 with Mac OS 10.5.8. With this computer it is impossible to connect to download.microsoft.com. When running the Microsoft AutoUpdate application to update Office, the app lists the available updates, but when I click Install to start the download of the update the application immediately say it has lost the connection. The problem occurs both for office 2004 and 2008.

It is also not possible to go to microsoft.com/mac and download the updates manually; the download links for all updates lead to download.microsoft.com and a "server not found" page is shown. All other web sites work normally.

The client is normally connected to a wireless network. I turned off Airport and connected to internet using his wireless USB broadband modem but had the same problem - so it isn't a setting in the wireless router.

If I open Terminal and ping download.microsoft.com I get back 127.0.0.1 (= localhost), which is very strange. I looked at /etc/hosts and /private/etc/hosts, but couldn't find anything unusual there, and the files had the same contents as on my own Macbook Pro which also has Mac OS 10.5.8.

My Macbook Pro can ping and download updates from download.microsoft.com when I'm connected to the same wireless network as the client's Powerbook. The client has a wired Windows XP computer that also has no connection problems. To solve the update problem temporarily I have downloaded the updates to my computer and transferred them to the client's computer.

As far as I can see the firewall in Mac OS is turned off. This connection problem has occurred on the computer since it had Mac OS 10.4 and Office 2004, and I think Leopard was installed on top of the old 10.4. To format the HD and reinstall everything from scratch would probably solve the problem, but is there anything else I can try first?

I'm having the exact same problem on all my Macs (iMac, MacBook Pro) running Snow Leopard. I cannot connect to download.microsoft.com, either through Microsoft Office 2008 AutoUpdate or manually by typing the address into Safari's URL field or by going to www.microsoft.com and navigating through their Office 2008 for Mac downloads section for the 12.2.3 update to Office 2008.

What the heck could be going on???? Thanks much in advance for any help.

Yep, this is the only website giving me this problem...I can reach any other website without problem. Also, I'd bet against it being an actual Microsoft server problem since I've been receiving this same error for over two weeks every time I run MS Office for Mac 2008 when it wants to run the critical 12.2.3 AutoUpdate. I'd expect either the server to be working after a day of having this problem or there being a message posted by Microsoft notifying people of the problem....since neither appear to be present, it makes me wonder if there's some default setting on Safari preventing me from downloading from Microsoft??

I just went to www.microsoft.com and did a test download of some MS Office templates and it worked fine. Could there be something in Snow Leopard or Safari preventing a connection to a server address beginning with "download"?

Thanks, sig...thought that alternate path would have worked but after getting to that site and finding the update file to be downloaded, it takes me again to download.microsoft.com where I get the error.

I read all the system requirements info and additional info and everything's in order. This is really strange. I was able to get to download.microsoft.com from my PC using Internet Explorer just now.

@sig: No, as I said in my original post two other computers can connect to download.microsoft.com. And for my client the problem has occurred for, I think, over a year, so it isn't a temporary server problem.

Since ping download.microsoft.com returns localhost, I believe it must be some setting somewhere in Mac OS itself. But I can't figure out where to look.

@BillBrogan: What happens if you open Terminal, type "ping download.microsoft.com" (without quotes) and press enter? Do you also get an answer containing 127.0.0.1?

Well, after reloading MS Office for Mac 2008 two more times with no luck, I finally went into AirPort Utility and played around with some settings and solved this very vexing problem. Not sure if checking the "interference robustness" box in the Wireless Options... area of the Wireless pane of the AirPort area of my Time Capsule did the trick or if it was simply the restart of the Time Capsule that fixed the problem, but my critical update 12.2.3 just downloaded finally after hours of frustration...
