New Extreme (slow on 5Ghz but NOT on 2,4Ghz?!?!?)

just bought a new extreme, problems with the speed on the 5Ghz NOT on the 2,4Ghz.

Max download speed on the N = 3544 kbps (443 KB/sec transfer rate). Upload speed = 1045 kbps (130.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

When I switch over to the 2,4Ghz it's as follows = download 23424 kbps (2928 KB/sec transfer rate). Upload 1021 kbps (127.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

on the 5Ghz multicast is set to high and use wide channels is checked.

basic setting is set to automatic Radio Mode and the network is allowed to extend (i have 2 AXS, 1 N and 1 B/G)

The reason for buying is that I need the B/G for my iPhone.. in the past I had a separate 2,4 and 5Ghz network running next to each other ...

thx for helping me out ...

grtz

I have the same problem. I was so frustrated with the new Airport Port (model MZ340 / late Oct version). It is can run stable for one day at most. The either my iMac (late 2007) or Macbook (Early 2008) would be halt in only internet. Sometime, the 5G is very slow, and sometime it is dead. I always need to swap to 2.4Ghz when I need to do important job.

Anyway, I am 100% Apple fans, I have iPhone2G (then iPhone 3G, then 3GS), 2 airport extreme, MacBook, iMac, Mighty Mouse, etc...
I hope this Apple Airport Extreme won't let me down...

I am not sure about a new revision. The serial number of the new device is very similar to the old one. The versions of Firmware and Airport programe are the same. No idea why everything is working fine with the new Airport. But happy. 🙂

Nevertheless, I had to set to 5 GHz channel manually to 36 to get an automatic connection to the 5 GHz after a boot. Woth automatic channel selection it did not work.

Same here, as stated with my dhcp & nat problems. There is something up with the new dual band router. I had no problems with the old extreme, and luckily I have an express as backup. Hopefully Apple will bring out a firmware update, or release new router version and then can return it for a new one. p.s. This router also locks up when assigning ports on the nat, even when the light on the front is green, and I can only restart the Airport by switching off at the plug.

Same here. I am VERY disappointed.

- 2.4GHz mode does NOT show more than 145Mb/s transfer rate when I am sitting with my MB Pro next to AEB! File transfer to USB drive connected to AEB does not give more than 11.2MB/s
Internet speed test (speedtest.net) -> 13.56 Mb/s DL / 0,96Mb/s UL / Ping 64ms

- 5.4GHz mode shows 300Mb/s transfer rate but the file transfer and Internet speed is HORRIBLE slow
File transfer -> 500kb/s - 3.3MB/s (not stable!!!)
Internet speed test -> 1.72 Mb/s DL / 0,94Mb/s UL /Ping 65ms

My conclusion is that 5.4GHz mode is not usable at all.

Have also tried to use an airport express to extend the range of AEB but the results are even worse. Speed is almost in the same range for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

I will return the airport express to Apple and I am considering to return the MC340 AEB as well (have it for 3 weeks now and BTW it is my second MC340!!!)

APPLE, where is the new firmware for AEB (MC340) and airport express????

+APPLE, where is the new firmware for AEB (MC340) and airport express????+

As a user to user forum, there is no evidence that Apple even reads these boards, so if you have a question for Apple or are looking for an "official" response on a given issue I would suggest that you should do so directly with Apple.

Airport Extreme Feedback

Dec 2, 2009 4:10 PM in response to Bob Timmons

Thanks for the feedback link.

I have submitted the feedback just a moment ago and I am wishing everyone who is affected by this 5GHz connectivity/performance issue would also do the same.

Given that I and some other people in here have exchanged the unit several times already I would say this issue is much more like a firmware issue rather than receiving a defective unit.

I have submitted the feedback too although I do not have these problems anymore with my new device.

As mentioned earlier I also called the Apple support one week ago. They confirmed that the 5 GHz issues are known and in their database. So I expect that they already work on a solution. Crossing fingers ...

Apple contacted me today and we had gone through series of tests. We discover that turning off "use wide channels" resolves my 5Ghz performance issue.

However with my previous AEBS (early 2009) model router, I am able to leave this option on and maintain a solid 300Mbps connection to the router. This is so weird.

Dec 3, 2009 3:17 AM in response to iApp Reviewer

Yes disabling wide channels will reduce the bandwidth by half but at least my iMac can now maintain a stable 5GHz connection without noticeable performance degradation.

Do note that I have to set the radio mode to "802.11n(5GHz) and 802.11b/g(2.4GHz)" in order to fully resolve this issue. Somehow having both bands operating in 802.11n mode will cause 5GHz band freezing every 30 seconds or so. I have reported this behavior to Apple and also asked them to read this thread.

Something is definitely wrong with this generation Airport Extreme's firmware! I have never seen anything similar with the last generation of Airport Extreme Dual Band.
