New Extreme (slow on 5Ghz but NOT on 2,4Ghz?!?!?)

just bought a new extreme, problems with the speed on the 5Ghz NOT on the 2,4Ghz.

Max download speed on the N = 3544 kbps (443 KB/sec transfer rate). Upload speed = 1045 kbps (130.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

When I switch over to the 2,4Ghz it's as follows = download 23424 kbps (2928 KB/sec transfer rate). Upload 1021 kbps (127.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

on the 5Ghz multicast is set to high and use wide channels is checked.

basic setting is set to automatic Radio Mode and the network is allowed to extend (i have 2 AXS, 1 N and 1 B/G)

The reason for buying is that I need the B/G for my iPhone.. in the past I had a separate 2,4 and 5Ghz network running next to each other ...

thx for helping me out ...

grtz

How far is your computer from the AirPort Extreme unit? Signals at 5 GHz fall off faster with distance than those on 2.4 GHz.

There are two things you can do to monitor Wi-Fi signal strength:

1) If you hold down on "option" key while you pull down the AirPort menu bar item, you'll see a signal strength value.

2) If you select the "Advanced" panel of AirPort Utility and click on the "Logs & Statistics" button, one of the tabs in the resulting panel will show you the strength of the signal and noise. Up to a point, the further apart those values are, the faster the transfer can be.

I have the same problem. Sometimes, the 5 GHz connection is very slowly or seems to be frozen for a while. In that case I switch to 2.4 GHz and it's working again. I tested it with my MBP (early 2008), my wifes MB (late 2008) and my companys HP laptop. Always the same. The Airport device is 2-6 meters away from the laptops without any barriers.

Additionally, I have the following problem:
Both Macbooks doesn't connect to the 5 GHz automatically after a boot but to the 2.4. It seems that they don't know about the 5 GHz. To solve that, I created a 5 GHz network with an own SSID and deleted all other WLANs in my network settings. Now the Macbooks connect to the 5 GHz but with that speed issue.

I am very frustrated! I bought the AP Extreme to use the 5 GHz for the MB's and the 2.4 GHz for our iPhones and hoped to setup the environment in a short time. But I have been wasting hours and hous and hours ...

How are those values labeled? I was referring to the value labeled "RSSI", which should be a negative number. If you're referring to a value for "rate", that's a theoretical maximum that may not be achieved in your case.

And were you able to capture the value for noise from the AirPort Utility panel?

Tried hard resets and new configurations for several times.

That's an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. You can see an analysis of such values in the second message of this thread:

That said, I can't offer any more advice on your problem.

Same here. I bought a new Airport Extreme so I could use the 2,4Ghz for my iPhone and the 5Ghz for iMac and Apple TV. On my previous Airport Extreme I was able to get 47 mb down. Now, I don't even get 10 mb down. The 2,4 Ghz seems to work best. Most of the time the 5 Ghz network isn't even visable under the airport icon in the menu bar.
I'm no expert, so I don't have a solution. I post this just to let you know that there are more than two people with this problem. I sure hope somebody will have a solution for this. Right now I deeply regret buying the new Airport Extreme.

There is still hope I think 🙂
I have the same problem, but I think its pretty good now. Create a 5Ghz SSID and make the radio mode 802.11 N (5GHz) - 802.11 b/g. This way if you connect to the 2,4 Ghz you would only get the b/g speed. I don't know if this is the magic way, but seems to be working alright so far. Now connect to the 5Ghz SSID and hopefully no slowdowns.
