Canon Vixia HF200 Best recording format for watching on Apple TV

Hello,

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF200 and I am trying to figure what is the best format to record in. The options for frame rate are 60i , pf30, pf24 .

Now I know Apple TV will accept 1280 x 780 at 24fps or 960 x 540 at 30fps.

I have already tested the 960 x 540 at 30fps using voltaic to convert the video.

But I have been unsuccessful getting the 1280 x 720 res video to transfer to apple tv.

I am wondering if pf24 is going to give me video that is 24 fps and what drawbacks there are to this format, or any tips.

Thanks

Thanks

What exactly do you intend doing with your video, without knowing I'd be tempted to suggest you shoot at 1080/60i, import and edit it in imovie and export to the large format.

However if you don't intend editing, or indeed keeping higher quality video for other uses, your options may be different. Please let us know a little more about your intentions.

I also forgot to mention the video I am trying to edit right now was recorded in SP format, I don't know the exact resolution of the SP format but the only way I could view it was to reformat it with voltaic, and I chose a custom format option for 1280 x 720 however I am wondering if voltaic might be stretching the originally video to make it 1280 x 720.

I can't find any documentation on what resolution SP format is. The other recording options are MXP Full HD at 24MBS, FXP Full HD at 17 MBS, XP+ Full HD? at 12MBS, SP Standard Play at 7MBS, LP Long Play at 5MBS

Not to worry, I movie will only import directly from the camera, it won't import them when you've moved them to your mac.

Voltaic will create AIC files from the .mts files, it will take a little longer than imovie does from the camera, but it essentially does the same thing. Your AIC files will be huge, this is normal don't worry about it. You should now be able to import them into imovie using the import movie option from the file menu rather than the import from camera option.

Does this make sense, have you been able to achieve this.

Kinda,

I'm not necessarily worried about using imovie, since I am not really trying to do any editing right now, I just want to be able to have apple tv play the videos that are at a resolution of 1280 x 720 at 24 fps , I want to convert the video to a playable format for apple tv, I know apple tv will play 1280 x 720 at 24 fps but using voltaic I have not been able to get apple tv to play the videos I have attempted to encode at 1280 x 720 at 24fps, maybe its more of voltaic question than an imovie question.

No your issue is that voltaic produces AIC files which cannot be played by the tv.

I've never tried myself, but you may be able to drop these AIV (mov) files into itunes, select them from the list of movies in itunes and choose 'convert to Apple tv format' from the advanced menu in itunes.

I know imovie can do this but it would involve learning how to use it a little bit, I also know QT pro can do it, but don't know whether you have it or know how to use it.

Try the itunes approach for now, if it works fine, you have your movies on the tv.

However in time you won't be satisfied with just doing this and will likely want to at the very least cut out shots of the floor and add a title, when you're ready watch the imovie tutorials or ask away in the imovie forums.

I appreciate the help!

When you say that Voltaic produces AIC files I am guessing you are talking about .aic as an extension? Or is that some other setting within the software? Voltaic has an option to save to an apple tv format which produces a 540p .m4v file.

I am trying to make an .mp4 file that will play on apple tv in 1280 x 720 at 24 fps. I prefer .mpr because it is the most versatile file I can play it on my mac or a pc or iphone etc.

Here are the settings I last used that didnt produce the result I was looking for

Thanks for the help.

I must apologise, I hadn't updated Voltaic in a while, I wasn't aware it converts to other formats, my older version doesn't, it only converts to AIC (which would have the extension .mov)

Can I ask why you want to create a movie at 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps rather than one at 960 x 540 @ 30 fps. If you like 24 fps video, that's fair enough, however if you perceive it to be higher quality you might want to run a comparison as I'm not convinced you'll notice much difference.

However if you wish to proceed with the export, the only part I can see that might be causing you a problem is your data rate, you might want to try 2000 or even more, you might need to set your frame rate to 24 and check that you have export to 24p selected in your Voltaic preferences.

Finally, there isn't any reason your PC cannot play .m4v files, you only need to ensure that Quicktime is installed.
