Question

Port 5222 and 5223 (Jabber and GoogleTalk)

Hi there,

Before I start to play around with trying to connect to GoogleTalk from iChat, I was wondering if my Snow Base Station will automatically forward requests for ports 5222 and 5223 (XMPP and XMPP over SSL respectively) i.e. whether my firewall has these ports open by default.

Actually, I guess all of the ports for client XMPP as declared with IANA:

xmpp-client 5222/tcp XMPP Client Connection
xmpp-client 5222/udp XMPP Client Connection
# [RFC3920]
# 5223-5224 Unassigned

Christopher, Welcome to the discussion area!

You will need to configure the snow AirPort base station (ABS) to forward those ports. See How do I use Port Mapping (Part I).

Thanks for your reply. Actually, having had a think about this, I guess I only need to port-forward if I'm hosting a jabber compliant server - for the purposes of being just a jabber client (iChat), I guess I shouldn't need to do anything. I'm presuming that XMPP client endpoints establish all of the required connections and that the XMPP server endpoints don't.
