1 app, 2 iPhones

You can install an app on multiple iPhones - there is no device limit.

You can install the same app, purchased once, on multiple devices. I have the same apps on two iPhones and an iPod Touch.

Don't forget to use the same itunes account.

I want to make sure I understand this. I bought Copilot Live NA for my iPhone. I would also like to install it on my wife's iPhone. Do I need to purchase Copilot Live NA again or can I install it on her phone legally without making another purchase? If so how do I do this?

If that isn't legal can I copy the 1.3 gig file form my computer to her computer and then have her purchase the application and then install it? One of the issues we have is the size of the file and the length of time (we're on satellite internet and its horrible) it takes to download. If so how would I go about doing this?

Yes, you can install it on your wife's phone. In your case, go to your wife's computer, sign in to itunes using your account. Download the app, a popup will appear asking if you want to buy, click yes, another popup will appear saying you already bought do you want to download again, click yes. From there, sign out, sign your wife back in, sync her phone & select the app.

One last question(s). Rather than downloading again can I just copy the 1.3 gig app from my computer to my wife's and then go through the purchase routine you suggested above? If so where would I locate the app to copy form my machine to hers?

No, you can't copy that way. However, if you want, first disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes on your wife's computer. Next, connect your phone, DO NOT SYNC!, go up to File, transfer purchases made on this ipod to this computer. All of your purchased content, including apps will then be transferred. Disconnect your phone, select what you want to sync to your wife's phone.

Being able to transfer purchases to her computer will definitely speed up the process. It took 15 or so hours to download the app originally and it really bogs down our internet access during that time.

Also, remember that to update any apps you transfer from your account to your wife's account must be updated through your account. I.E. log out of her account. log into your account, update the apps, log out & log her back in.

Ok, let me make sure I have the work flow right.

1) from wife's computer log into iTunes under my account name
2) disable auto sync (under preferences)
3) connect MY iPhone to her computer
4) DO not sync
5) Go to File and transfer purchases made on this iPhone to this computer (her computer)
6) This will copy all purchased apps and content to her computer
7) Disconnect MY iPhone
8) Connect my WIFES iPhone to HER computer
9) Select the apps we want to sync on her computer

Once the sync is complete should we do a backup of her iPhone to the computer?

Will this make her eligible for any updates to the application software?

Remember to sign out of your account after you're done with the transfer & sign her back in. See my post above about updates to apps. Sync away, select what apps you want on her phone. That's all there is to it.

A backup is done automatically each time you sync.

Ok, here is the revised set of steps:

1) from wife's computer log into iTunes under my account name
2) disable auto sync (under preferences)
3) connect MY iPhone to her computer
4) DO not sync
5) Go to File and transfer purchases made on this iPhone to this computer (her computer)
6) This will copy all purchased apps and content to her computer
7) Sign outout of my iTunes account
8) Disconnect MY iPhone
9) Sign into iTunes with under my wifes account
10) Connect my WIFES iPhone to HER computer
11) Select the apps we want to sync on her computer

This is turning out to be a lot easier than I expected it to be.

Well, after all that it didn't work. I watched the file Copilot Live NA being transferred from my phone to my wife's computer via iTunes but after it was complete and I went to the step where select the app I want to sync to the phone it wasn't in the list. I then did a directory search on *.ipa and it wasn't on her computer. I verified that it was on my computer.

I can only assume that some apps can be purchased and used on multiple devices where others can only be used on one device.

Oh well.....

Go to your wife's computer, sign in using your account, go up to "Store", "Authorize this computer". You can put apps on as many devices as you like, there is no limit.

Unfortunately I didn't read your reply until after I went ahead and purchased a copy of copilot live na for my wife. Fortunately the price was still at the thanksgiving special of $20.

I will definitely keep this in mind on future purchases.
