Black screen after installing Windows XP on Bootcamp

Hi guys, I've got a problem with Windows XP on Bootcamp and hope you can help.

The installation of XP poses no problems, but when I install the drivers from Bootcamp and I restart, I can hear XP booting up (I can even hear the XP tune) but the screen stays black.

Now I'm almost certain it has to do with the extra port for a secondary monitor on my Imac 27". I think XP uses the port for the secondary monitor, instead of my 'normal' monitor.

The obvious solution would be to hook up a secondary monitor, but i don't have one!

Hope you can help me!! 🙂

Thanks in advance,
Sander

I am now having similar problems. The screen on my Macbook Pro is now permamently darkened to pitch black, I can hear it load Windows, but the boot camp keyboard manager is either not working or not loading on start up. Upon restart, i hear the Wall-E chime, but the screen stays dark, so I can't see to switch Op Sys, or do anything.

Tried hooking up an external monitor, but no luck... What can I do?

bump... come on... i installed windows xp with sp3 just fine, got to desktop and everything. plopped in the snow leopard install disk to install the drivers, it installed whatever, then restarted. i see the windows logo, then BLANK/BLACK screen AND hear it loading (the typical nerdy windows start sound). Can't do anything because I can't see anything. I have a new 27inch iMac. I heard someone say to try using the disk that came with the iMac as opposed to the straight up Snow Leopard disk but that's REALLY lame Apple. Fix it since your software busted it.

Well, it seems that using the install cd that came with your mac might solve the issue. It did for me.

I had a similar issue with my iMac and Vista: Windows boots fine in the background, but I could not see anything. I also used a snow leopard cd for driver installation.

I solved the issue by booting Vista in safe mode, setting the driver of the graphics card to standard svga in device manager and rebooting. That gave me the display back. Then I used the install cd that came with the iMac to install/repair the drivers and voila...

Hope it helps

The fix as discussed above is working. You can do a couple of things. Use the process with secure startup (both XP an Vista) and set to SVGA then use the original 27" startup disk that came with your Imac27. This contains the correct version of Bootcamp 3.0 with the correct drivers. Everything runs smoothly after this.

Or if your not sure repeat the procudure of partioning and reinstall windows partition but DO NOT USE the Snow Leopard Bootcamp version.

For those who have received an Imac27 with snowleopard installed. Find a frined who has one with the "old" install CD and use that one instead.

Good luck

It appears that Apple has a bug in Snow Leopard. Numerous sites are reporting black screens that occur randomly.

In my case, after installing SL on my MBP, my screen will randomly go black. It didn't show up for several days after I installed SN, and it may not show up on any given day.

When it does happen, I can hit any of the F keys that do screen functions and the screen will light back up, but go off again if I try to use a program.

Sometimes, the screen will go 1/2 black (black on top, video on bottom). I have tired resetting the PRAM several times. No luck.

There is nothing physically wrong with the computer, it is software, and a lot of people are having this problem on lots of different configurations. It is a pain to have to reboot in the middle of a program.

As far as I can tell, Apple has not acknowledged or responded to this problem.

Let's make some noise!

I have a similar problem with the black screens that I tried to fix but I just made it worse. I upgraded the hard drive to a 500gb 7200 rpm Seagate. Partitioned it 50-50. Installed XP pro and it worked okay but would not recognize the 24 inch Dell monitor I had been using, (black screen) so I tried re-installing the Windows drivers as per the Boot Camp installation guide. It froze and I had to shut down. Now I can't open Windows because it is missing the drivers. I tried repairing the disk with XP and that does not seem to work. I need some ideas because I can't call my IT guys in on this or they will have my neck since they have already spent a couple of hours yesterday installing network settings and programs. Thanks, Bob

I have three screens, the MBP, and two external, one hooked to the external DVI port and the third hooked to a Gefen adapter in a UBS port. They all behave identically when the screen goes black, and go up and down with the F keys.

I also put a new 500GB internal drive in, but I don't think it has anything to do with it.

It is a SL bug.

So here is what I found. After installing Windows 7 with boot camp. After the install Windows wants to reboot and then go to the "Out of Box Experience" registration screen.

At this point the screen is black. I found that plugging in a second monitor through the mini display port the registration screen shows up on the second monitor. You can then complete the registration part. After that Windows boots normally to your iMac monitor.

This was on a new 27" iMac. Using boot camp and Windows 7 Home Premium full installation.
