Use Airport Graphite's modem via ethernet wire to Beige G3

Thanks to xpostfacto, I'm running Tiger on my Beige G3. I want to connect the Beige G3 via an ethernet cable to my Airport Graphite and dial in to the internet via its modem. (ie, using the Airport Graphite base station as an external modem). Two questions:
1 - Do I need a crossover cable to do that or will an ordinary ethernet cable suffice to connect the mac to the base station's solitary ethernet port?
2 - Assuming success with using the base station as the modem, can I connect my airport card enabled powerbook (with dead internal modem) wirelessly to the base station at the same time?
Thanks,
Louis

1. To connect a Beige G3 to the ethernet port on a Graphite Base Station, you must use an ethernet crossover cable. Note also that to manually control the dialup modem built into the Base Station from a non-wireless Mac requires use of the utility found at:

2. Yes, your Airport card equipped Powerbook can connect to the Base Station at the same time, and both can share the dialup internet connection either simultaneously or separately.

Thank you Henry. Can you tell me how to do #1, now that I've connected the Beige to the Graphite Base Station with a crossover cable?
Airport Admin Utility does not reveal the base station at all.
What settings should I use on the Network panel?
Intuitively, I defined the "Location" as "ethernet crossover to base station" and chose built-in ethernet, but then don't know what to do about the tcp/ip, pppoe, etc settings.
Thank you,
Louis

Thanks, Henry.
I've read the references you listed but the Airport Admin Utility can not "see" the Graphite base station crossover-cabled to the Beige ethernet port.

Interestingly, my powerbook sees it fine via its internal airport card and connects me to the internet via the base station modem as you predicted.

Knowing that the base station works for the powerbook/wireless, don't you think I'm safe in not "Starting from scratch" and resetting the station, etc.?

So, back to the Beige crossover-cabled to the base station: What do I set on the network pane for tcp/ip? When I tell it to use DHCP, and renew the connection, it displays a long # like 192.xxx.xxx.xxx and a subnet like 255.255.0.0 . (I'm not home now, and can't see the actual number)

When Airport Admin Utility does not show any base station, and I scan for "other" base stations, a window pops up to ask me for the ip address of the station I wish to connect with and shows the familiar 10.0.1.1. as the candidate. Nothing happens when I put in the password (the same one that works on the powerbook/wireless) and say "connect".

I am obviously missing something! Help!
Louis
