keep window size alike

I often switch between using my macBookPro with and without an external monitor.
I want it to keep the window size of programs alike - when I switch from the big to the small screen. It very irritatiing that I have to pull and program-windows in and out every time I'm on the go or home..

some who know of a utility / app that does it, or has some tricks?
