Can not get Keystation 49 to work.

Question

Can not get Keystation 49 to work.

I'm connecting the M-Audio Keystation 49 to my iMac (Snow Leopard) but it is like Garageband is not recognizing it.
Do I have to tell Garageband in some setting that the software piano should be controlled by the keyboard?

I get power over the USB so the keyboard is on.

Help!

I had the same problem once. My 49 was connected to my Mac and it was powered but GB was not responding. It turned out ( after a long hunt for the problem) that it was my cable. If you have another cable give it a try.

I tried another cable but sam issue.
Do you think Snow Leopard might have changed something? It has worked before.
If I understand it these devices are plug and play so it should not be any driver issues really.

Another thing I noticed was that Musical Typing does not work either.
That should work with just the keyboard connected.

I can control Garageband from my keyboard with no problem, but just the Musical Typing does not work. The keys are grayed out.

I'm using Snow Leopard with no problem. How did you install Snow Leopard. Upgrade or clean install?
My musical keyboard is working under Snow Leopard.

When you connect your 49 and select a software track and and instrument do you see the little MIDI light blink in the Tempo wndow when you press a key on the 49?

Have you repaired permissions yet? Deleted the prefs?

There is another way to test your keyboard. Do you have any stand alone synth applications? If so open one and test your keyboard.

Since you say your musical keyboard does not work and is greyed out and there is no blinking MIDI light in gb when using your keyboard it seems GB might be at fault.

Have you tried the oddball problem fix yet?

Thanks for the suggestions.
This fixed the issue with using the keyboard to play. I can also access the on-screen keyboard with the regular keyboard, I was very hope full that the 49 would work now, but the issue still remains with the 49.
Any other suggestions? I don't have any other applications to try the 49 on ...

Try this with your 49. Connect it to your Mac

Find the Audio MIDI Setup application on your Mac. Its most likely in your utilities folder.

Open the application and then under the windows menu choose "Show MIDI window".

Is there a Keystation 49e icon there? Click it.

Then click the "Test Setup" icon in the bar above.

Play your 49e. You should hear a small bell like chime each time you press a key on the keyboard.

Thats because your looking at the "Audio Window" showing you the Audio Devices.

Look up at the applications pull down menus. click on "Window". Select "Show MIDI window". Now you will see the MIDI Studio window with your MIDI choices.

Opps , now I see.

What I have here are a few icons for the MIDI devices that I have had connected to the iMac including the 49, but it is all grayed out even when I connect it.
I tried to connect two of my other MIDI devices (Line6 Tone Port and Tascam USB interface) using the SAME cable, and they are all coming up without any issue.

So even when you 49e is connected and you click the 49e icon and then click "Test Setup" your 49e does not respond with a bell chime like sound when you press the keys?

Some long shots.
Have you tried a different USB port?

Could be that the cable is OK with the other MIDI devices but not with your 49e.

I have tried all different USB ports.
I have tried different cables.

I connected it to another Mac and I get the same results. I can not believe that the keyboard is bad as it is actually receiving power.

Nothing happens when I select Test Setup. I can not select the keyboard as the icon is grayed out.

I'm stumped. It could be that the keyboard can recieve power but cannot send out data.

I'm just curious about your Snow Leopard install. Did you do it as an upgrade or a clean install?
