Magic Mouse battery only lasts 30 days?

I bought my new 21" iMac back in October and today got a message from Magic Mouse that batteries need to be replaced.
What kind of battery life other folks are getting from MM? Is there anything can be done to increase battery life of MM?

You know UPS Canada doesn't make this easy! I watched my tracking status frequently throughout the day yesterday 08/12/2009 and it always said delivers 09/12/2009. After 3:30 pm yesterday, it still never said "OUT FOR DELIVERY." So I go out for an hour and come home to the shipper's note that they were unable to get my signature and will retry to deliver today between 2-5 pm.

Today, the tracking status now says OUT FOR DELIVERY dated 08/12/2009 10 am! They are either backdating their updates to look good or their scans are not being picked up in a timely manner. Useless. Trying to send UPS an e-mail to let them know they are not updating the online status properly and their feedback page refuses to send the email! Just wait, when I go out this morning, will there be another note waiting for me?

If your not into using rechargeable batteries, I just picked up 60 Rayovac AA batteries from Home Depot for 10 bucks. They had them on a front display by the registers. I figure if my Magic Mouse will last 1 month on a set of batteries, these will last me for 30 months. I've never seen batteries this cheap in my life, hope they don't screw up my equipment.

As an alternative, I tried lithium batteries but they too lasted only a few weeks. I'm wondering if the use of third-party software, such as MagicPrefs, could affect battery life. MagicPrefs adds functionality to Magic Mouse, including various combinations of taps, pinches and swipes. I've been experimenting with it and similar utilities out of curiosity, but I may have been putting undue strain on the batteries in the process. Any thoughts?

i've had my magic mouse fir 2 days now, and i am already down to 97%. if my battery life drops at this rate ill need new batteries in about 30 days. Am i suppose to turn off the mouse when im not around, or does it have an auto sleep? anybody know? also same question with the new keyboard. and why is it only half a keyboard!!??!!

The keyboard and mouse do auto sleep so no need to turn off in normal usage. If you do not plan to use the computer for a couple of days or more, then turn them off to save even more energy.

The keyboard apparently evens saves energy in-between keystrokes which must be a lot of energy saved as my keyboard always says the battery is at 100%. I know I'm not a fast typist, but...

Interesting point. Perhaps all the caressing of the Magic Mouse is rapidly using up those electrons compared to a wired mouse or a conventional button wireless mouse. After all now it's a trackpad as well as a multi-function mouse. I know I am guilty of almost constantly stroking the thing compared to my previous old mouse. We may need to adjust our expectations based on how fond we are of using the mouse. Now if Apple or Apple representatives have said you can expect four months of use, I don't think that takes into account how some people (most people?) end up using it. If I only used it to click with an occasional scroll, it might get four months. But I'm not going to test that theory as it would deprive me of the pleasure of stroking it constantly... and don't tell me to get a dog as the ones I have will are jealous enough of the new 'baby' in the home!

+if my battery life drops at this rate ill need new batteries in about 30 days.+

That sounds pretty good to me - much better than the 14 days I did first time I used a wireless mouse. By greatly increasing my use of the "page up," "page down" and "end" keys I got it up to 60 days, but that's been the best for me.
