Even though you don't say what version of Safari you have (and it can't be 4.0.4 as you are only on 10.5.3), the following should work:

(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)

Do you have enough RAM? Less than 1GB can cause slowness. Is your hard drive too full? Less than 15%, or 15GB, of free space can also cause slowness.

Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:

Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)

(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /

Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )

Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:

This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html

Click on Apply Now and close the window.

Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

If that didn't do it, then try this as well:

Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.

Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:

form values
download.plist

Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete

com.apple.Safari.plist

Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).

Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

1. I'm running OS 10.4.11 and Safari 4.0.4. It dogs out the computer, especially when logging into sites.

2. I tried deleting the files you mentioned, no help. I also trashed the Safari program and downloaded a new copy, but the installer package needs OS 10.5 (I guess Software Update has a different setup), so I pulled the old copy out of the trash and reused it.

3. How would I know if it's running in Rosetta?

Re the comments to "... what version of Safari you have (and it can't be 4.0.4 as you are only on 10.5.3)...."

I run a Powerbook G4, 12" aluminium, Mac OS X 10.4.11, =with= Safari 4.0.4 (4531.21.10) and a variety of extensions, including Google Gears. I've run Safari 4 since its first day of release in beta, albeit with tweaks to terminal during the beta. Since S4's formal release, I haven't experienced any issues with log/in or load/in speeds that significantly differed from a majority of other Safari 4 users or that couldn't be routinely tweaked.

BTW, I'm also a sandbox/alpha tester and widget developer for Google and frankly, there isn't much I can't do with my sys.

:::I'm just sayin'...... 😉

As I just posted in another thread, I too am having the same issue. I'm running OS 10.6.2 and Safari 4.0.4

I have not downloaded anything off the internet, installed any new software nor changed a single preference on my computer. This makes absolutely no sense.

Safari doesn't respond upon launch. It freezes for an undetermined length of time. I've had to force quit it more times than I can count.
