Black screen, can see the startup menu if I shine light on it

Hello all,
I just purchased a used Macbook and all was fine up until a couple days ago. I turned on the laptop everything seemed fine except when I tried to open it, the screen would go dark so I had to close it then open really slowly to keep the screen light on, not fun. Now the screen is dark regardless of what I do and the apple no longer lights up. The laptop still starts up, no funky noises just can't see the screen unless I use a flashlight.
Could it be a backlight, a cable or board, sorry I'm really new to the Mac and of course I have no warranty so I'm looking for help.
I don't know my correct OS info cause I can't see my screen 😟 but apple gave me 2007 Macbook when I entered the model #.
Thank you 🙂

Could be the backlight, or the power supply to the backlight, or the ribbon to the backlight. You may have to bring it to a repair shop to find which is the problem.

Apple laptops use LCD screens that used a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp as a "backlight". Or LED powered backlights after June of 2007. LCD screens need a backlight, because the screens themselves (the liquid crystal display part) do not actually emit any light. In order to see what is on your screen, you need a special light, located behind the glass LCD screen, to brighten things up enough for you to view them. You can usually tell if your backlight is damaged - turn on your MacBook or MacBook pro, or your PowerBook or iBook for that matter, and if your screen looks dark, but you can still see things on the screen when you shine a flashlight onto it, chances are your screen has a damaged or non-functional backlight.

You can pick up a MacBook screen on eBay for $65-$75

For instructions on replacing the screen this is the best site I've found.

Or there's an eBay seller that will replace your screen for $180
