I haven't done it myself but here is a link to someone who had similar problem. go half way the page and follow the instructions there. There is also a video. try it. let us know if it works.
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (9.0.2). Here are the troubleshooting steps for restore problems (including error 9). http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275?viewlocale=en_US
Note that restore issues are almost always computer problems, not iPhone problems.
