Can't connect Windows XP PC to Mac via ethernet

Just bought a new iMac and switching over from Windows PC.
Trying to migrate files by connecting my old PC to my new iMac.
iMac is not recognizing my PC.
Maybe I'm using the wrong computer name and share name format.

Stefan,
Yes, that was what I was trying to follow. I want to use the Direct Connect method.
I turned off the firewall on my PC and made one of my folders sharable, and then plugged my Windows PC to my iMac with a standard ethernet cable.
I went to Connect to Server from the Finder menu and typed smb://IPaddress/ShareName into the Server Address field. I'm not sure if this helps but my IP address was 169.254.XX.XXX.
When I click Connect, I get the error message
"Connection Failed .... There was an error connecting to the server ...."
I've pinged the IP address of my PC above and it is working.
