Software Update Server 10.6.2 not providing all updates

There seems to be an issue with Snow Leopard Server's Software Update Server and Leopard vs. Snow Leopard updates.

I thought it was a bug, but now I think it's a "feature."

Take, for example, the Mac OS X Combo Updates to 10.6.2 and 10.5.8. After I synced SUS with Apple, I only saw the 10.6.2 update listed, and 10.5 clients did not see the 10.5.8 update. I disabled "Automatically enable copied updates" and am now able to use the "Choose Version" button with a specific update selected. From there I can choose whether or not to serve the 10.5.8 or 10.6.2 update.

There are three Safari 4.0.4 updates, too. I'd wager one is for leopard and one is for snow leopard and the third for tiger. That would dovetail with the fact that there are three different downloads on http://www.apple.com/safari/download/.

I see no mention of the "Choose Version" button in the Software Update manual.

I see no way to enable more than one update for each "software package."

I am hoping this is a bug and we don't need to run separate SUS for leopard and snow leopard clients.

It doesn't appear to even work right. If I select to provide 10.5.8, the list changes, but when I save it just changes back to 10.6.2 with the update disabled. Looks pretty broken.

I'm seeing the same thing on our local SUS. In face, thank you for helping me understand why our Leopard clients didn't see updates, when I knew they should have some available.

Hopefully someone at Apple already knows about the issue and will issue an update soon. This renders SUS unusable for mixed (Snow Leo/Leo) networks.

Any chance someone has figured out a work around?

I am working on a test installation of 10.6.2 server and I'm seeing the same thing as CJLinst in the Server Admin app. We are hoping to upgrade our 10.5 Software Update server to 10.6 in order to support both 10.5 and 10.6 client computers.

Since I was seeing the same buggy behavior in the Server Admin app as CJLinst I decided to go ahead and try to see if a 10.5.0 client computer would still get the needed updates despite the fact that the 10.5 updates didn't appear to be listed in the Server Admin app listing of enabled updates. Over the years of dealing with buggy Server Admin app behavior I have learned to not always trust what is listed in the app. I did a clean wipe and reinstall of 10.6 Server and I updated it to 10.6.2. I then enabled the Software Update service and configured it to Copy "all" updates from Apple and to "Automatically enable copied updates" and that is the only thing I configured on the service. After the software update service downloaded all the updates, I then did a clean wipe and reinstall of 10.5.0 (workstation edition - not server version) from a retail disk on another computer. I then configured the client computer to update against my test server. When I ran software update on the 10.5.0 client computer it did show the "Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.8 768MB" update as being needed and available for download from the test server despite that particular update not appearing in the list of available updates in the Server Admin app settings for the Software Update service. However I don't know if you can selectivly disable/enable the 10.5 and 10.6 updates independantly from each other. For example I don't know if you can enable the OS Update for 10.6.2 but disable the OS update for 10.5.8. I updated the test 10.5 client computer with all the updates that my 10.6.2 software update server made available to the computer.

To confirm that my 10.6.2 Software Update server was pushing out all the 10.5 updates I reconfigured the 10.5 client computer I was testing with to update against the official Apple software update server. I then ran software update on the client computer to see if it would see any additional updates from the official Apple server and it did not. This proved that my 10.6.2 software update server was pushing out all the 10.5 software updates.

For those of you new to 10.6 Server, read the System Imaging_and_SW_Update_Adminv10.6.pdf available on Apples website.

In particular pay attention to this entry which states that different clients will access different sucatalogs on the 10.6 Server, so if you don't enter the proper sucatalog, you won't get any/all the updates for your client.

To point unmanaged clients to a software update server:
1 On the unmanaged client, open Terminal.
2 Enter the following command:
$ defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
URL
Replace URL with the URL of the Software Update server, including the port number
and the name of the catalog file for the specific version of Mac OS X. For example:

- For Mac OS Xv10.4:
http://su.domain_name.com:8088/index.sucatalog

- For Mac OS X v10.5:
http://su.domain_name.com:8088/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

- For Mac OS X v10.6:
http://su.domain_name.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog

You can verify your change using the following command:
$ defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
To point the unmanaged client computer back to the Apple Software Update server,
use the following command:
$ defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate

Are you saying that your 10.6.2 SUS is happily serving all updates to 10.5 and 10.6 clients simultaneously?

My production 10.6.2 Software Update server is updating both 10.5 and 10.6 clients simultaneously. I am pushing out the Software Update Server setting via Open Directory running on a 10.5 server. For the Software Update setting I am only specifying the server hostname and port (i.e. http://update.myserver.com:8088/) and not that extra stuff in the OS version-specific URL mentioned in the manual. I have my 10.5 and 10.6 computers lumped into the same Open Directory computer groups and I have the Software Update Server specified in the preference settings for those computer groups.

Yesterday I attempted to create another 10.6.2 Software Update server on a different computer to use in another test network I was working on. I did a clean install of 10.6 and updated and configured the Software Update Service just like I mentioned in my previous post. However on this new Software Update Server, the only updates it would download from Apple were the 10.6 updates. I could click on that "versions" button for some of the updates and see that the 10.5 and 10.4 versions were not being downloaded because they didn't have that blue "copied" indicator next to them. The logs show the server connecting to Apple and not finding any new updates to download. I tried clicking on that button to manually download an update on several of the 10.5 updates but nothing happened. Out of frustration I just wiped and reinstalled the server THE SAME WAY as before and this time the server started working correctly and downloaded all updates for 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 which as of yesterday was about 303 updates total.

So I have come to the conclusion that currently it is a crap shoot as to whether or not you are going to get a working Software Update Service when you install your server. If it doesn't work the first time I guess you have to wipe and reinstall and maybe you'll get lucky with a working installation. I am not too surprised by this because I remember experiencing the same thing with Open Directory back in the Tiger (10.4) days.

Ditto. I get very strange behavior with the Server Admin UI. It would be livable if it actually resulted in updates being deployed.

It doesn't actually make sense for the 10.5.8 and 10.6.2 Combo updaters to be under a "Choose Version" button. But in any event, when I click it, the Save button may/may not be available, choosing a version may/may not make the Save button active, and if it is, clicking it won't make 10.6.2 available. I have a 10.6.0 machine here, and it still cannot see the 10.6.2 combo updater. Even though it's "copied" and ticked in Server Admin.

In particular, my server says 307 "Updates Copied", 197 "Updates Enabled". This appears to be an either/or situation, as these bugs (which may be the UI or may be the UI reflecting bugs in the ASUS software), wherein you can't have both 10.5.8 combo and 10.6.2 combo available.

This is definitely a nasty bug, not user error. I've been through all that doco, and what I find most annoying is that the entire "Choose Version" facility is skipped over completely in the doco, so you spend a lot of time trying different combinations and options before you figure out that you're not doing anything wrong, it's the system itself is faulty.

Well I guess my luck ran out. Yesterday afternoon my production 10.6.2 SUS server which I mentioned had been simultanously updating both 10.5 and 10.6 clients started not syncing some updates. Specifically it was missing that last Java update for 10.6 named "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1". The Java updates that came out at the same time for 10.4 and 10.5 were there. Just that one for 10.6 was missing. So I initiated a manual sync with Apple by pressing that manual sync button in the Server Admin app. The SUS "Overview" screen in the Server Admin app indicated that 4 more updates were downloaded from Apple because the "Updates Copied" number incremented by 4. I went back to the screen that lists all the updates and then I searched the listing for the 10.6 Java update I was missing so that I could enable it. But that update still was not listed. Further there were no updates that showed that they needed to be enabled even though the SUS Overview screen showed that there should be 4 more updates to enable since the "Updates Enabled" count was 4 less than the total copied. I restarted the Server Admin app with no effect. Then I did a Google search on the problem hoping some new solution for this problem had come out recently and I came across this Apple Support Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3127 . That article is for a problem of clients not seeing updates due to the 10.6 SUS server not completely downloading an update. Since this is the first official Apple Support doc I have found that somewhat acknowledges our problems I went ahead and tried the suggested fix. Well that was a big mistake because my SUS server is now more messed up then ever. After I applied the fix you need to resync with Apple because in one of the steps you are deleting a file that tells the SUS server what updates are available on your server. After I let the server resync with Apple and confirmed in the logs that there was an entry that said "Sync Completed" with no errors I check my available updates listing in the Server Admin app. There were only about 187 updates listed instead of the 300+ I had gotten before. Obviously not all the updates were downloaded. I let the server sit overnight thinking maybe it just needed some time. When I came in this morning I checked out the available updates listing in the Server Admin app and nothing is there - blank. I checked the SUS overview screen and it says 0 updates copied and 0 updates enabled. I did a manual resync again and after about 15 minutes I get a "Sync Completed" entry in the logs. I check the updates and it is still missing updates but that is better than nothing. I quit the Server Admin app and restart it and the SUS available updates listing is again blank with nothing listing and the SUS Overview screen is again listing 0 updates copied and 0 updates enabled. So I guess I'll be trying my luck at another total wipe and reinstall. I think I'll buy a lottery ticket too since I'll probably have better luck at winning the lottery than getting a successful 100% working 10.6 SUS install. If I am not busy picking up the pieces of my 10.6 SUS server after smashing it into a thousand peices out of frustation, I'll try to post any additional findings I have on this problem as I go through the troubleshooting process.

To summarize here is where I am at:

Out of 4 clean installs of Mac OS X 10.6.2 Server SUS: 0% success rate. The 10.6.2 Software Update Service was installed on 2 identicial Mac Minis purchased at the same time with MAC addresses that are only 1 digit off from each other so they must of been right next to each other on the production line. I installed Mac OS X 10.6 server from the same install DVD onto both computers. Both computers were on the same network subnet when I synced them to Apple so network connection-wise they were the same. I think this is about as close as you can get to having identical computers. Both Mac Minis exhibited the missing updates problem with the missing updates being different on both computers. So what updates become missing from a SUS server appear to be random to me.

I also noticed some additional wonky behaviour with the Server Admin App. If you have the option "Automatically enable copied updates" enabled, the "Enable" check box to the left of updates in the available updates listing becomes grayed out. This suggests you can't enable/disable an update at this point. If I click my mouse button on one of those check boxes the check box stays the same and doesn't change state. But if I navigate away from the available updates screen such as changing to the SUS Overview screen I get prompted to "Save Changes" even though it didn't appear that the state of the check box was changed when I clicked it. So I don't know if you can still enable/disable updates even when the "enable" check box is grayed out or what affect it has if you click on a check box and then hit the save option when prompted.

I decided to hook a packet sniffer to my SUS server so that I could see what it was doing when I manually synced it. I attempted a manual sync with Apple yesterday (Dec 16) at around 10:50am CST. Looking at my packet sniffer I could see that my SUS server was connecting to Apple and downloaded the following files:

That last file appears to be the one for 10.6.x computers and I could see in the packet sniffer that my SUS server downloaded that file and the contents of that file had the information for the recent 10.6 Java update that my SUS server was missing. After the manual sync my SUS server was still missing the Java Update for 10.6. I could see in the packet sniffer logs that my SUS server never even attempted to download the 10.6 Java update from Apple. The download for this update is at this URL:

I checked out the SUS config files and found out that the installer file for the Java update that I was missing is supposed to be stored in the following directory on a SUS server:

/var/db/swupd/html/content/downloads/59/00/061-6893

My SUS server which had that update missing did not have that directory. My other 10.6 SUS server which does have that update did indeed have that directory present on the server and I could see the installer package in the directory.

Later in the day before wiping and reinstalling my server I attempted one last manual sync at around 3:40pm CST and my SUS server downloaded the missing update. The second time I manually synced I had enabled the option "automatically enable copied updates". Usually I only have that option set the first time I sync to Apple after setting up a SUS server. After the first sync I disable that option so that I can check updates before allowing my client computers to apply them. Since that 2nd manual sync worked for me I was starting to think the problem was related to not having that "automatically enable copied updates" option set when syncing with Apple. But another person in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2259607 reported that they suddenly got their missing updates yesterday without making any settings changes to their SUS server. So now I am starting to thing the problem is either something to do with needing to have the "automatically enable copied updates" enabled on your SUS server OR something was just plain broken on Apple's end with their update servers and it was fixed yesterday.

Is there anyone else whose SUS server is now working and downloading the updates it was missing? If so, do you have the option "automatically enable copied updates" enabled on your SUS server?

Ours is still not getting the 10.5 updates. In fact, I just had to cycle the SUS to get it to see the last few updates (printer drivers and raw compatibility). I do have "automatically enable copied updates" enabled.

I have "Automatically enable" unchecked. When I checked these new updates and hit save, The copied ball changed to gray, the checkbox grayed, and I got the "!" indicator next to the new updates. Here are my logs from last night's automatic sync:

Doesn't look like Apple fixed the problem based on what you guys are seeing. It looks like what I saw was just more of the randomness we have all been experiencing. I have those same "Unable to download or create .smd file for product..." errors in my logs. In fact it looks like we are getting that error on the same updates.

Yesterday before my server downloaded the missing update I was thinking that it may be a file permissions problem so I tried to manually execute the SUS sync process as the _softwareupdate user. I did that by running the following command in the terminal:

sudo -u _softwareupdate swupd_syncd

That command kicked off the SUS sync process but it still didn't get my missing update so I don't think it is a file/directory permissions problem. Here are my SUS server log files for when it got the missing Java update yesterday and then also another sync it looks like it did last night as part of the normal scheduled sync time:
