iMac 27" Transport? Specifically Tenba case.

Hey,

So Im planning on buying an i7 27" iMac very soon, I will buy it in Canada in a few weeks, as it's slightly cheaper than here in the UK.

Now, Im a snowboarder. I spend 6 months of the year each year in Canada. Summers the majority of time I spend in England to save up for the next season.
This makes it a bit of a pain in the arse to get there and back each time. I could invest in a flight case, which can be expensive. Or do as my friend did at the end of this season with his iMac (abeit it had a smaller screen, so slightly smaller box) - he just used the original box and stuffed clothes in to pack out the empty space (TBH I think this would make me a bit too nervous).

So the case Ive been looking at seriously considering is a Tenba transport case - ( http://www.tenba.com/products/Transport-24-Apple-iMac-w--wheels-Air-Case-for-Com puter-Equipment.aspx).
A little pricey, yea, but as I will be transporting to and from Canada each year, I think a good investment.
As you can see, however, is that they haven't released a new model for the 27" yet.

I wont need it until the beginning of June, when I return to England, so I figure theres a good chance it will be out by then.

My questions are -

- Does anybody know if Tenba update there lines fairly regularly? How likely is it to be out by June?

- Does anybody have experience with a Tenba bag for iMacs? If so - good, bad, recommend, overpriced?

- How much, could anybody guess, the price increase from the 24" model (currently $679) to the 27" be?

- As I already have a big boardbag, and suitcase, I would need to pay extra for this flying back each time, does anybody know if it would be a better to just get it shipped by a courier back England? (would save stress on the airline losing it, or somebody stealing it at least!)

- Finally, Am I crazy for getting this? I will be doing video editing, so the machine is perfect for me, but should i just wait another 2-3 months for the new MacBook Pros? The iMacs IMO are always better value for money than the laptops, and if I have a good solution for transport each year, I figure it wont be so much of an issue.

I need to get everything planned out perfectly in advance, so I can set aside the money now, while I have it.

Cheers

P.S I am aware that they do custom models, but I would imagine the price would go up too much for my budget.

I would venture that it is not something that you want to be doing with a Mac that size, especially in that type of bag/case. If you look around this forum, as well as other Mac forums on the internet, the 27" iMacs are arriving direct from China with busted and cracked glass in the lower left corner. They appear to have a weakness in this area that does not handle transport well. While they are in route from the manufacturer they are Apple's and the shipping company's responsibility and repair/replacement is on their dime. If it happens with an airline, then it becomes an issue between you and them. I do not think it would be worth the hassle.

I just wanted to write on behalf of Tenba to tell you that we are working on a new case specifically fitted to the 27-inch iMac, and we expect to have it available within a couple of months. As with all of our shipping cases, it will be hand-built in our Brooklyn, NY factory. Since the iMac weighs in at about 30 lbs., the case will have wheels.

I'm the product manager for Tenba, so I'm happy to answer any questions that you have.

First off, thank you very much for coming to these forums and sharing this information, very much appreciated!!

Mainly just knowing it will be out has put my mind at ease, the only thing I am curious about is, will it still be part of the same line (same appearance, features, etc) as the current iMac line, or is a big revamp coming? I only ask because then I will be able to make a pretty accurate guess of the new dimensions/weight/price.

Looking forward to having such a quality transport case!
Thanks!

P.S - (You don't have to answer this, I'm just curious) As you work at Tenba, what would your personal advice for shipping from Canada to England be? Right now the cheaper solution is the plane for sure (around £90), but for around £200 I can have it safely sent by Fedex without all the airport worry (lost, stolen, etc).

The new case will have almost the exact same dimensions as the case for the 24-inch iMac, and it will weigh pretty much the same — within a pound or two anyway. It will have the same wheel configuration as the 24-inch case, and on the front will be the Tenba Datapanel to hold a shipping waybill, business cards, and the customizable/engraveable aluminum plate. The new case will be available before the end of the year.

As far as shipping fees are concerned, most photographers that we work with around the world check their equipment as luggage on their flights because it costs a fraction of what FedEx or a similar air carrier charges. We work with photographers who check as many as 10-14 Tenba Air Cases for a single flight. It's the only way to move large cases affordably. One of the primary reasons that we keep the exterior of our cases so black and bland is so that they don't draw unwanted attention at a luggage carousel or moving through the airport. Even the Tenba logo is black on black. So while I can't make a specific recommendation, I will tell you that checking the case as luggage is the way most people travel with their machines.

Are you doing anything to take into consideration that this is a Mac with a huge piece of glass on the front of it that is breaking between the factory and customers?

I do not know who handles shipping worse, baggage handlers and automated airport baggage delivery systems or shipping company's, but this is an iMac with an already proven disposition for breakage. I have watched baggage handlers drop kick luggage as they loaded airliner baggage holds. I have received packages from UPS, FedEx, ect. that looked to be use as a football. I am not sure anyone can build a case to guard against this issue on this iMac.

Yes, we have considered the especially delicate screen in our design. Remember a shipping carton is really just designed to get the products shipped safely a few times. Tenba Air Cases have to hold up to hundreds and hundreds of shipments. Rental companies ship the cases all over the world, accumulating abuses far beyond the typical UPS/FedEx/DHL-style carrier. That's what the cases are built for.
